Use of wood stoves has been banned inside Fairbanks on the bad cold days when the inversion traps the air for weeks at a time. Oddly, the City power plant, and the University and Fort Wainwright burn coal and it seems very cleanly so you can’t smell it although ice fog sometimes happens on the Richardson Hwy past Fort Wainwright when it is 40 below or colder, which is fairly often still in the day of Global Warming.

Spokane, Washington, has long had regulations limiting the use of wood-burning home heaters, dut to the occurrence of temperature inversions and the city being situated in a sort of a valley. At times wood burning is prohibited; at other times the city is patrolled by “inspectors” on the lookout for wood stoves emitting too-visible or too darkly colored smoke.
