REDMOND, Wash. (AP) - Former President Clinton said Friday that a letter he wrote to the National Archives was to expedite release of his papers, not slow the process or hide anything as rivals are suggesting in criticism of his wife. Hillary Rodham Clinton was quizzed during this week's Democratic presidential debate as to why correspondence between her and her husband from their White House years remained bottled up at the National Archives. Barack Obama said that was a problem for her as a candidate after "we have just gone through one of the most secretive administrations in our history."
One issue is whether Bill Clinton had sent a letter to the Archives asking that the communications not be released until 2012, and whether Hillary Clinton would lift any ban, a question raised by debate moderator Tim Russert. "She was incidental to the letter, it was done five years ago, it was a letter to speed up presidential releases, not to slow them down," the former president told reporters Friday. "And she didn't even, didn't know what he was talking about. And now that I've described to you what the letter said, you can readily understand why she didn't know what he was talking about."
Russert's question "was breathtakingly misleading," Bill Clinton said. In response, Barbara L. Levin, spokeswoman for NBC, said: "Tim's question was entirely on the mark." Clinton said that under the presidential documents law, he is not required to release any material until 2012. "Unlike previous presidents, I have already released one million pages of documents, about half of which affect Hillary - the records of the health care task force," Clinton said.
The Republican National Committee said that Clinton's remarks referred not to the records of the health care task force but to records of a separate panel working on the issue, White House Health Care Interdepartmental Working Group.
Clinton spoke to reporters after delivering remarks to Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) employees about corporate giving in connection with his book, "Giving."

Do you think Hillary Clinton would be a good choice for US President?
Hillary "didn't know" what Russert was talking about. When in doubt--plead stupidity (snicker).
Same old, same old with the Clintons-----spin, spin, spin; lie, lie, lie. The two of them are hiding official White House records dealing with Hillarycare, as they have from the getgo. Taxpayers had to get a court to order them to release the original records. Peon taxpayers are not allowed to know what The Royals are doing. Anyone who dares question these two feels the lash of the Clintons' ire. Only question is when Queen Hillary will deign to say, "Let 'em eat cake."
Morning Liz,
I just cannot help but marvel just how literally dumb these people can pretend to be. I need to see this supposedly 5 year old letter to know if what they are spinning is what was actually spun.
Now when exactly was it that these liberals started demanding their Soviet Style 911 Commission? Was it about 5 years ago???
For those who care about the truth, the letter in question was all over the airwaves for days before the debate. The idea Hilary didn't know about the issue is preposterous, in fact she didn't deny knowing about it.
This headline is so dishonest, it actually says Clinton is trying to get the papers out quickly. Yikes.
If she’s that dense, she isn’t smart enough to be my president!
That is why Bill denies it for her, that way neither one of them can get caught.
I thought she was the smartest woman in America.
Good point! If she really didn’t know what Russert was talking about, wouldn’t she have said she didn’t know and ask him for clarification before responding? Which she might think makes her look bad to admit that she wasn’t aware of the issue, but, she looks very bad to consider that she continued talking on about the issue which she didn’t know about. if we can believe Bill here.
Is this how it’s going to be? Anytime Hillary has problems, Bill will come rushing in to her defense? Isn’t she supposed to be tough enough to do this on her own? Part of her campaign for president is her saying that she is rough and tough enough to be commander in chief. well, it’s hard to convince people when the Hillaryland people whine and complain about some tough questions in a debate. If she can’t handle a yakfest debate and stand on her own 2 feet, how the heck will she deal with bin Laden or Ahmadineajead?
Sent the letter five years ago to speed up the process. HAAAAAAA HAAAAAAAA HAAAAAAA. Sounds like the same type of speed up he used to go after Bin Laden. HAAAAAA HAAAAAAA HAAAA.
I would not be surprised if the letter is forged, backdated, and otherwise compromised, in order to make Hillary look good.
Good point------some "feminist" she is-----she needs a man to bail her out.
Bureaucratic SNAFU alert.

Could be. Personally, I suspect that the instant they started to prove Hillry's accusation, a few months after 911 on the Senate floor holding up that New York paper planted story What did Bush know; and When did he know it there was a move afoot to get their inquisition Soviet Style to GET BUSH and protect Saddam. This bunch who projects themselves as all knowing had to know their inner circle communications had to be protected lest the rest of US know what they knew and when they knew it.
Maybe someone will request at least a copy of this supposed letter, it can't be considered confidential they have already told us what is in it? Further given that Sandy the Burglar was sent to dispose of who knows what, these people were very very worried about US finding out what they knew and when they knew it.
I am exhausted and pained to keep hearing especially male Republicans calling this woman formidable without explanation. What do these Republicans know and when did they know this about her?
Where have you been the last 17 years? They're not stupid. They're liars.
Russert or NBC should request it.

Dear National Archives,
I forgot to say “rush.”
Sincerely, Bill Clinton
LOL!
Actual MEN piling on,
or making excuses for,
Miz Hillary...
I haven’t seen anyone “man up” for her.
Are there any MEN left in their party?
Better write that down so’s you won’t forget.
