Ex-Illinois Gov Ryan gets Prison in Wisconsin

CHICAGO (AP) -- Dan Rostenkowski, former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, once called it "my Oxford education."

But there's not much to laugh about at the federal correctional institution at Oxford, Wis., where former Gov. George Ryan is assigned.

Ryan got word Thursday from federal officials that he'll serve his corruption sentence at Oxford, his attorneys said Friday.

"We're pleased for the family's sake that it's Oxford," said Ryan's chief counsel, former Gov. James R. Thompson.

Ryan had been assigned to a federal prison camp farther north, outside Duluth, Minn., a long haul from the family home in Kankakee, Ill. Oxford, where Ryan is to begin serving his 6 -year corruption sentence on Wednesday unless he can remain free on bail as he appeals, is in western Marquette County, approximately 65 miles north of Madison.

Its proximity to Chicago is the main reason why Oxford is a favorite among politicians, mobsters and other big shots who for years have requested the minimum security prison when they have to do federal time.

Judges can recommend it. But deciding who gets to go to the favorite big house of Chicago's criminal elite is up to the Bureau of Prisons.

Actually, the 73-year-old Ryan is hoping that he never has to go to any prison -- even Oxford. He has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to set bail. Attorneys say that's a long shot.

Remaining free on bond pending appeal is unusual enough. And Thompson says he doesn't think the high court has set bail in 35 years.

But Justice John Paul Stevens on Thursday asked the government to reply to the request for bail from Ryan and Warner. He gave the U.S. solicitor general's office until 2 p.m. Monday to come up with its brief.

No hint of political party affiliation. Hmmmm...Liberal Republican. The Democrats in Chicago through in with Ryan when he ran against Conservative Democrat Glenn Poshard from Southern Illinois. Poshard was much more conservative than Ryan and Illinois would have been much better off with him than Repub Ryan.

Yes, I did. I just found it amusing that ‘Das Kapitol Times’ isn’t shouting it from the rooftops, LOL!

However, they got a Rostenkowski jab in there. ;)

The MSM perhaps did not list the party since Ryan was a lib??

Yeah, right. Just a slip up at the paper. Heads will roll.

Surely you didn't buy Poshard's act? Rats like him talk a "conservative" game in order to get elected. Then they raise taxes and do everything they can to push the Euro-style, secular-socialist welfare-state agenda, just like the rest of the scumbag Democrats. Homo marriage anyone? "Fisting" for third-graders?

Sure, there are "conservative Democrats", lol. And a tooth fairy, an Easter bunny...

I know Poshard personally, so I think I know his "act" fairly well. While he did vote with the Dems on the welfare agenda he was much more conservative on guns, abortion, etc. than Ryan.

The State of Illinois and the Illinois Republican Party would be in better shape if Poshard had won over Ryan for governor IMHO.

Yeah, I’m in Illinois and I “buy his game.” He was a downstater, and was much more pro-gun and pro-babies. IUt was Ryan who put on the act. Oh, and once in, Ryan pushed for a 12 BILLION dollar roads bill and claimed he wanted to phase out the tolls. Since then, he got his 12 bil, the tolls have been doubled and expanded for those who don’t use iPass.

I voted for Poshard, and the pro-lifers who voted Ryan regretted it as he couldn’t even sign off on an anti-partial birth abortion bill.

Poshard wasn’t supposed to win the primary. The combine plays with Republicans in Illinois.

Oh, and your guy Casey (the elder not the sickening younger) was more of a straight shooter than Ridge ever dreamed of being.

1. I agree 100% about Ryan - - he’s a complete scumbag, corrupt to the core, and a perfect representative of the corrupt GOP in Illinois.

2. I voted for Bob Casey (the elder) over Barbara Hafer (who has since switched parties to rat, where she belonged in the first place).

3. If Poshard was any kind of a decent human being, he wouldn’t be a Democrat. His party affiliation tells me automatically that he’s a scumbag and a liar. At least with the Republicans it’s still the exception (like Ryan) rather than the rule.

Regards,
LH

Well, all I can say is that I hope Illinois can do better in the future than run one complete scumbag against the other. Is there any hope at all for the GOP in Illinois, or is it hopelessly corrupt like the GOP in New Jersey and California?

Regards,
LH

I am not pretending that Poshard is Phil Crane or Henry Hyde. But I will say that the best Democrats (Zell Miller, Bob Casey, John Silber) are better than the worst Republicans (Lowell Weicker, William Weld). At some point, we are going to need two parties that actually love their own home, and when the hippies finally DIE OFF those who buy into it still can spin their wheels with the Green Party or something. I envision a future (albeit in my dreams) where a Huckabee-type would be a leading Democrat and a Tom Coburn type would be a leading Republican. A Poshard, a Zell Miller, Bob Casey or a Jim Lawlor (CT pro-life Dem who was torpedoed by 3rd party Weickercrat Lynn Taborzak in ‘90 for US Rep) will be needed at some point to provide decency to the Democrat party, or (in other dreams) its successor.

Not so much Illinois, but Chicago has a nasty influence, and Chicago dominates. I would have Illinois politics roughly analogous to New York state's.

The proof that the Republicans are completely corrupt is that the apparatus WOULD NOT ENDORSE A SITTING MOSTLY CONSERVATIVE US SENATOR (Peter Fitzgerald) because he ran anti-corruption and meant it. It was because of that that we got Barack Obama.

He was also accused of taking his “trophy wife” on a tour of the Chicago ‘porn underground’. She had pressed charges against him—once his corruption charges started hitting the fan....

Oh yeah she is Jeri Ryan the actress.
