U.S. agriculture giant Cargill recalls ground beef
Agricultural giant Cargill Inc. said on Saturday it is recalling over 1 million pounds of ground beef distributed in the United States because of possible E. Coli contamination.
Cargill Meat Solutions said the 1.084 million pounds (491,700 kg) of ground beef was produced at the Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, facility between October 8 and October 11, and distributed to retailers across the country.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture returned a confirmed positive for the E. coli bacteria on a sample produced on October 8, the company said.
Symptoms of E. coli 0157:H7 illness, the strain associated with the recall, include potentially severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and dehydration. Children, the elderly and people with poor immune systems are the must vulnerable.
"No illnesses have been associated with this product," John Keating, president of Cargill Regional Beef, said in a statement. "We are working closely with the USDA to remove the product from the marketplace."
The recalled products have use/freeze-by dates of Oct 19 through Nov 3. Most will have the USDA establishment number of EST 9400 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
In addition there are various weights and varieties of ground beef distributed for further processing and repackaging that will not have the same establishment number.
The recall was the second by Minneapolis-based Cargill in a month. On October 7 the company recalled about 844,812 pounds (383,200 kg) of frozen beef patties produced at a Wisconsin plant.
Reading about yesterday’s pizza recall I found that the FDA had been “investigating” since July but the recall was announced yesterday.

hmm, makes me wonder if Cargill shouldn’t do background checks on their employees who work in the production line.
I wouldn’t put it past some mentally ill enviro, or PETA nut to plant themself as a mole and contaminate the beef products. we all know how far libs will go to further their causes. reducing the greenhouse gas that cattle produce is a big one. :roll eyes: look what they did to the logging industry, tobacco, etc.
I prefer to make my own hamburger patties, but we're not even safe in buying ground beef anymore....frozen or otherwise.
Too bad we have to eat to live or I wouldn't shop for food anymore.
The stores are so busy pulling poison products off their shelves that consumers have very little to choose from these days.
That is why you are suppose to cook it and why restaurants are not allowed to server raw beef.

It’s really hard to get those illegals to break a lifetime of habit and wash their hands huh? The Cargill turkey plant here in my town looks like a little bit of Chihuahua.

Not all uncooked meat has E. Coli, but cooking it to a high enough temperature will kill the bacteria. Problem is hubby and I love rare hamburgers, so these days I buy ground beef in bulk in advance, make patties and wrap in meal-sized portions. I freeze them and wait for a few weeks to see if there’s a recall. If not, I cook the meat the way we like it. The kids eat theirs well done, so no problem there. I’ve been lucky in that I haven’t had to throw out any burgers yet, and we get to eat what we like. But I hate the fact that I’m waiting to see if others get sick or not before I know it’s safe to eat.
Using ground beef in other recipes such a chili should be safe, since the meat is thoroughly cooked.
E Coli won’t hurt you if you cook everything.
And of course keeping meat juice away from plates, forks, etc. Most people take those precautions anyway.
