Plan: Use wounded troops if diplomats refuse service Rep. Hunter urges Bush to fire rebellious officials who complain Baghdad assignment 'death sentence' U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif. Responding to reports that State Department officials are refusing to serve in Iraq because it's too dangerous, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., has proposed a novel plan to President Bush – to bypass the agency and recruit from among U.S. military troops discharged after suffering injury. Hunter, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, told talk-radio host Glenn Beck today he met with Bush just 30 minutes prior to the interview and gave him a letter outlining the plan. "I said, 'Let's go over to Bethesda and Walter Reed (hospitals) and as we get these new – these soldiers and Marines who are embarking on new careers," Hunter said, "let's recruit them for the State Department; and let's fire these guys that refuse to go, and we'll give the State Department careers to these military guys." (Story continues below) A State Department proposal to have "directed assignments" in Iraq caused an uproar among foreign service officers, CNN reported, resulting in a contentious town hall-style meeting Wednesday. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice responded today, saying "people need to serve where they are needed."

Ship the pansy-waisted cowards to Iraq and put em out for Al Qaeda to carve up.

I suspect that our wounded soldiers would be respected more by the Iraqis than some snivelling diplomat.

Most of those people are hold overs from the Clintoon administration and should have been fired a long time ago.

Liberals are big on diplomacy but when its their chance to step up to plate in a war zone to bring about peace, they run for the hills. Phonies.

Amen to that. And the troops would be better diplomats as they are nationalistic patriots and actually care for America and moral values and want to win the war against Islamic fascists.

Actually 3 birds - the two you highlited above plus the added bonus of the military personnel’s ability to PLAN. Something sorely lacking in the State Department.

When I was out of college, I spent a very breif time in the State Dept. My thoughts? What a bureaucratic and politically correct load of Bull-crap the whole thing was. That was 15 years ago, but I can say for certain a certain mind-set was ingrained in the US Diplomatic Corp. NY/DC left-wing, yuppie, politically correct. They all want to get posted to Belgium and France to be among their fellow anti-Americans. It is no surprise these clowns don’t want to serve their country in Iraq.

It’s amazing how often that happens. How often what we heard do it their way. Then if Bush does, they run the other way. The subject doesn’t matter. Remember hydrogen fuel cells? It was all the rage as the savior of the planet until Bush came out and supported it and now you barely hear a blimp about it.

This is kind of silly.

The diplomatic service and State needed to be cleaned out a long time ago. Bush neglected it.

But many of these jobs can't just be filled by any wounded vet either.

This ain't gonna happen. Period.

Actually, I bet there is a bunch of us “old farts” (ex-military now too old to serve) and not only the “wounded warriors” of today who would volunteer in a heart beat to serve this duty were the invitation extended by the State Dept.

Count me IN!

Heard about this yesterday - think it is a great idea. Has anyone asked the wounded troops if they would do the job? State is full of Socialists who are terrified of their own shadows & protect their turf at all costs. Throw the bums out who won’t work for their country.

The State Department will never extend that invitation. They have to fire refuseniks.

"This is kind of silly."

I agree, it comes off as a cheap political stunt. There's no law that prevents veterans from applying for jobs in the federal government. I've never attended a job fair on a military installation where the feds weren't represented.

I disagree. It is rather brilliant, not easy to do but a political coup none the less.

They just need the smart ones that can be trained, and there is enough wounded that you will be able to find the skill sets you need to build those diplomats and training programs.
