Network pulls 'Dog' Chapman TV show

Duane "Dog" Chapman's tape-recorded tirade has cost him his TV show.

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" has been pulled off the air by A&E, the cable network announced Friday. The network stopped short of saying the show was canceled, apparently leaving open the possibility of a return with new episodes or reruns.

"In evaluating the circumstances of the last few days, A&E has decided to take Dog The Bounty Hunter off the network's schedule for the foreseeable future," A&E said in prepared statement. "We hope that Mr. Chapman continues the healing process that he has begun."

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Yum Brands, which advertised Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut on "Dog the Bounty Hunter," had pulled all of its ads, calling Chapman's comments "despicable."

Production of the Hawaii-based reality show was suspended earlier this week after it was reported that Chapman made repeated racial slurs in a tape-recorded phone conversation with his son, Tucker.

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" went on the air in 2004 and was one of A&E's highest rated shows, averaging 1.2 million viewers in primetime.

Chapman, who owns Da Kine Bail Bonds in downtown Honolulu, has apologized for repeatedly using a racial slur to refer to his son's girlfriend, who is African American.

The Associated Press reported on Friday that Tucker Chapman taped the phone call with his father, and sold it to the National Enquirer, which posted the tape on its Web site on Wednesday.

Chapman's son did him a favor.

May your relatives do you one in like fashion.

So we should all just expect our family members to stab us in the back? I realize some families are like that, but I wouldn’t expect that from any of my family members. That kind of behavior should never be considered normal.

Would you like to be fired for a non-PC statement you made off the clock in a phone conversation with a family member? That's a little more "apples-to-apples" than your over-bland description.

Would I like it? Of course not. Dog has every right not to have anything to do with his son again for selling him out. But that doesn't mean the employer does not have the right to fire me for whatever reason. I don't have a right to a particular job and neither does Dog.

I agree.

I think the issue is compounded by the son's betrayal of his father. I can't get past that. Dog would be a better man than most if he forgave him.

“Do you ever post on any other kind of thread?

LOL”

Sure. These are some of the the threads I get a lot of disagreement on so they are kind of fun. :)

I also like the Ron Paul threads, “sky is falling” threads, “Hillary is our next president” threads, and “I’m not voting for anybody except the second coming of Christ” threads for the same reasons. ;)

"What Duane said to his son was PRIVATE."

Because of its nature and consequences, it was apparently a public statement. See it in the media. Stealing is private too, until the thief is caught.

A family member who is a drug addict and whom you just fired? I would probably be a little wary, yes.

I don't have a right to a particular job and neither does Dog.

Of course not. I think the point which people are making on this thread is that PC has reached the point that a private phone call to a family member can put your job in jeopardy. If you don't see that as troubling, then we don't see things the same.

The counter argument to that is that Dog made his living off of the human flotsam segment of reality television and pretty much anything is fair game in that arena. His comeuppance is hardly a surprise. I'm not sure that the average joe on the street has to worry about PC to the degree that the public figure does.

I don't say the kinds of things that Chapman said or do what trashy people do. From your obvious sympathy, you should probably be more afraid of that happening to you.

"Right now it is the parent apologizing for his language and who's ashamed of himself."

Right. Because the son feels no shame for betraying his father and selling him out for some inconsequential money.

No. Because the father is ashamed of HIMSELF.

He's apologizing for himself, NOT for the son.

It's absolutely amazing to see the contortions you people go through.....LOL

Disingenuous. It's only public in the sense that the Paris Hilton sex tape is public. It's public because of our tabloid culture and our insatiable desire to peek through the peephole into celebrities' (however that term has come to be defined) lives. It is public because of a low-life who sought to manipulate an otherwise private situation into a money-making opportunity. It is public because of the worst in human nature.

Oh, on that you’re absolutely right. I also think that’s why he can do that job so well.

BUT, can you imagine him being your father? It’s hard to imagine what a tough childhood that would be.

Maybe it was.

But if Dog had reason to think the girlfriend was going to record the family then I don't blame Dog for telling his son to get rid of her. I wouldn't have used those words I don't think. I know if I thought the girlfriend was going to try setting me up I would have been extra careful if I was the Dog. I don't see the reason for canceling his show either. This double standard bs has got to stop. I don't watch his show as I just am not interested in it. However I do admire Dog for bringing Andrew Luster back to this country.

"A family member who is a drug addict and whom you just fired?"

So this man's son is a drug addict? Are we supposed to be surprised?

Having heard the entire call, Dogs position was a rational one.

Stab you in the back?

You should be able to use racial slurs to smear and hurt people in your family, and yet if anybody repeats the TRUTH about what you do, they are stabbing you in the back?

Talked about warped moral priorities.

What kind of Mafia "family values" do you ascribe to?

He's apologizing for himself, NOT for the son.

The contortions are yours. I get that you have some sort of special anger towards certain words. I don't get that you will defend a son who sold a weak moment in his father's life for $15,000. And yes, Dog is apologizing for his own behavior either because he realizes it was wrong (hopefully) or because he realizes that others thought it was wrong (more likely).

Either way, the son's total lack of shame in selling out his dad does not make him the knight in shining armor. He is not a hero.

I will kindly assert that we all have moments of human weakness (in varying degrees) where we need to brought gently (or with stout thwacks about the head and shoulders with blunt objects) to what is right and just. It is at those moments that those closest to us should exhort us towards to the good. Or sell the moment to the Enquirer. Either way. If you would like even your very minor human failings (I'm assuming you've had at least one) to be dealt with in a sanguine fashion by those to whom you are closest then you are a different species than I.
