Network pulls 'Dog' Chapman TV show

Duane "Dog" Chapman's tape-recorded tirade has cost him his TV show.

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" has been pulled off the air by A&E, the cable network announced Friday. The network stopped short of saying the show was canceled, apparently leaving open the possibility of a return with new episodes or reruns.

"In evaluating the circumstances of the last few days, A&E has decided to take Dog The Bounty Hunter off the network's schedule for the foreseeable future," A&E said in prepared statement. "We hope that Mr. Chapman continues the healing process that he has begun."

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Yum Brands, which advertised Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut on "Dog the Bounty Hunter," had pulled all of its ads, calling Chapman's comments "despicable."

Production of the Hawaii-based reality show was suspended earlier this week after it was reported that Chapman made repeated racial slurs in a tape-recorded phone conversation with his son, Tucker.

"Dog the Bounty Hunter" went on the air in 2004 and was one of A&E's highest rated shows, averaging 1.2 million viewers in primetime.

Chapman, who owns Da Kine Bail Bonds in downtown Honolulu, has apologized for repeatedly using a racial slur to refer to his son's girlfriend, who is African American.

The Associated Press reported on Friday that Tucker Chapman taped the phone call with his father, and sold it to the National Enquirer, which posted the tape on its Web site on Wednesday.

I heard it was 15,000, Don’t know if true or not. Pretty low price for selling out your family, career, and eventually girlfriend. He probably could have gotten 17,500 with a little more savvy.

“But after having seen so many hundreds of comments like that (sympathies with Chapman’s speech)”

Show me one where anyone agreed with the content of Chapman’s rant.

Even the folks with the cameras? I take it there are cameras following the family around. Sorry, I’m cable-challenged, so I’m not familiar with the premise of the show.

"For petes sake, he WORKS with the trash, doing a job that needs doing, what do you want?"

I never said that he wasn't performing an important function. I don't necessarily believe that he deserved to be televised doing it or paid huge money to be filmed doing his job. The trash he works with didn't make him trashy, he had that down pat prior to being a bondsman/bounty hunter.

The things that came out of his mouth were just awful, I don't care what the circumstances, it's a character thing.

That being said...his son SELLING the tape is even more discusting.

IMHO, of course

Wow, what a dumb ass..Now, he doesn't have a job and could possibly be up on a parole violation. Wouldn't that be poetic?

I’ll tell you what. I bet his employment opportunities on the Island got just a little tighter. He’ll be in the news again soon. IMHO

Morally, what’s the difference between thinking something and saying something in confidence?

The difference is in merely thinking something and in relaying the thought to someone else.

That can be a big difference depending on who you say it to.

When we write things on this board, it is obvious anyone in the world with a computer can access it. It’s PUBLIC. What Duane said to his son was PRIVATE.

Even Dog isn't stupid enought to think his son is incapable of repeating what he said.

I would hate to think that I couldn’t be honest with a family member if I thought they were in a bad relationship for whatever reason.

I would also hate to think that any (presumably) private family conversation - or argument - could be used as tabloid fodder. While I don’t like derogatory names, I’ve certainly had my share of conversations on many subjects that I wouldn’t want made public for various reasons. Fortunately, I’m not famous enough where it’s an issue ;)

Freedom of speech does not mean that you are free from private reaction from that speech, including being fired.

Would you like to be fired for a non-PC statement you made off the clock in a phone conversation with a family member? That's a little more "apples-to-apples" than your over-bland description.

Thanks , I’ve never heard it without the bleeps. Well I don’t blame Dog too much now at all. If he is employing the son & doesn’t like the girlfriend who was going to tape them then he gave his son the choice to stay with her or leave her. So the son sold the father out. I think thats really stupid of Tucker. Somethings should be private & I think this is one of them. I wonder what Tucker will sell next about the family. I bet theres more & when the money runs out the girlfriend will be gone.

Right now it is the parent apologizing for his language and who's ashamed of himself.

Right. Because the son feels no shame for betraying his father and selling him out for some inconsequential money. Not a real strong argument in your favor.

"Show me one where anyone agreed with the content of Chapman’s rant."

You ranted against his son's decision to publicize his speech instead of disagreeing with Chapman's speech. Your sympathy is transparent in this thread.

Chapman's son did him a favor. Chapman should follow up on that by getting right. Contrary to popular civilian perceptions, trashiness doesn't make anyone tougher.

to me, it sounds as if “some” of what his kid said was edited out......at least 2 gaps of absolute/total silence when it seems that he might be talking

I don’t like the language or the slur but no one should lose their gig over a private phone call!

Public officials are now starting to fight back to stop this phoney political correctness
