OK...what is a "thingy"
Myself | Myself

I'm an engineer and yes...I use a lot of duct tape but after 35 years of marriage my wife still translates items she can't put a name to as a "thingy". I've let this pass with a smile but have wondered how many people actually use this word (if it is a word) during everyday conversation...

A friend of mine a while back made me realize the first part of “chingalatta” was “chinga”, which is a pretty bad word in Mexican Spanish.

In my little corner of the Air Force, "thingies" don't exist.

However, "whatsits" and "how ya doins" are in abundance.

"Hey there, Hero. Give me that whatsit over there by the how ya doin."

That sentence wouldn't confuse me at all.

Well, it’s obvious you’re a man. Men don’t know that “thingies’ are kept on the upper shelf, right next to the do-hickies and just above the whatchamacallits. Have you learned yet that thing-a-ma-bobs are kept in the drawer?

Maybe if you explain “kanuter valves” to her, she’s explain some of life’s finer points to you! :)

I often use "Chingaletta", which a Mexican forman I used to work for would use to call anything he couldn't name at the time.

Ohmigosh, my FATHER used to use that term! Although I think it was closer to "chingalla". Any difference in meaning? I had no idea...

A great friend of mine who is beautiful gave me a birthday card and it said “ happy Birthday! I have a Thingy for your Dinghy.” Could that have meant what I thought it might have meant? Shucks, seems pretty clear now!!!!!

I use it! It is a generic way of saying, “I can’t really describe what it is or what it does .... and it’s a lot better than just saying “Uh.....” or “Duh....”!”

"Although I think it was closer to "chingalla". Any difference in meaning? I had no idea..."

There could be some variations I guess, or I may have it a little wrong, but one thing for sure, it meant "F'n thing".

A thingy is the same thing as a whatchamacallit or a doohickey. Hope those are spelled right.

Halfway between a gizmo and a doodad.

Thats called a phatch-a-motter. You use it with a bisco-fig-nut.

"what is a "thingy"

Nope. Not going to touch that. Wouldn't be prudent.
