Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner who pleaded guilty to state charges in 2006 and now is the subject of a federal investigation, has been sued by his former lawyers for more than $200,000.
The law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski LLP says in papers filed in state Supreme Court in Manhattan that Kerik has failed to pay bills of $202,384
The lawyer, Kenneth Breen, moved to another firm but still represents Kerik.
Kerik was police commissioner when Rudy Giuliani was mayor. It was Giuliani, who now is running for the Republican presidential nomination, who recommended Kerik's failed nomination to be the first-ever head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In June 2006, Kerik pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor administrative violations, admitting he accepted $165,000 in renovations on his Bronx apartment from a company attempting to land city contracts - Interstate Industrial Corp. - and that he failed to report, as the law required, that he got a $28,000 loan from a real estate developer.
The transgressions occurred while Kerik was head of the city Correction Department, a post he held before Giuliani named him police commissioner. As a result of his plea, a city jail facility in lower Manhattan that had been named for him - the Bernard B. Kerik Complex - was renamed.
The Fulbright and Jaworski lawsuit says Kerik retained the firm in 2005 and Breen was in charge of his case. After Breen left the firm in April of this year, Kerik chose to have the lawyer continue representing him, court papers say.
In the meantime, the law firm billed Kerik for $185,757.69 and $16,626.35. A $10,000 payment was drawn on the account of The Kerik Group LLC, court papers say. The law firm sent the check back.

Curious why he kept the lawyer, though.
