I urge everyone to write Motorcyclist Magazine and let them know how you feel. Below is the letter that I wrote to the magazinie.
Just picked up the Nov 07 issue (of Motorcyclist) from the (Post Exchange) PX. I needed something to read while waiting in the barber shop for my high-and-tight. I flip open the magazine and go straight to the Buell article by Aaron Frank.
I get half way through the the first paragraph when I came across the phrase "ambiguous Iraq War". This is a slap in the face to anyone who has worn a uniform.
First, as a Sr NCO with 20 plus years, there is nothing ambiguous about the war in Iraq. It is so very clearly a part of the larger war against Islamic Terrorism. Haven't you seen the videos of hooded men shouting Allah Akbar Every time they chop off a head or bomb innocents and Soldiers alike. Doesn't Frank remember 911?
There is nothing ambiguous about watching an Soldier present a triangular shaped folded flag to a woman or child seated beneath a canopy and reverently recite a solemn speech that begins,"On behalf of a grateful nation."
I spend everyday thinking about the war and how best to train new Soldiers so that they can carry on and win this "ambiguous war".
So when I pick up a motorcycle magazine the last thing I want is politics from a publication that should stick to what it knows, motorcycles, and let the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines handle the war.
Some people want a bike good for a single riding season or two, others prefer one that'll run year-round and plan to keep it a decade or more. You pays your money and takes your choice.
Keep her between the ditches man.
I always try to keep the tyres off the verge.
It's SO much fun to run across new Harley riders who haven't the faintest idea what *HRD* means. Harley *Racing* Davidson? Harley Davidson Research?
Not quite....
I feel that anyone riding a Harley is liable to buy almost anything.
I call mine “Ruptured Duc” as a tribute to those on the Doolittle Raid in WW2. I’ve been riding as long as I’ve been in the Army, about 23 years. I’ve had the opportunity to ride something from most of the brands available over those years. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
The last HD dealer I went to (Cartersville, Ga) told me that my bike had more miles on the odometer then any Harley they had ever seen or wrenched. (jeeez, I figured they had bikes with moss growing on their North side)
So I asked them what I had won?
They said - smiles and smiles of miles!
I said - Wonderful, now just find somebody to put some air in my front forks and stop eye humpin’ the thing!
They said - No charge. :-)
(91000 smiles, 14 rear tires, 8 front, 6 batteries, no leaks)
You must ride a Kawasaki Concours...like mine
great bike
this is an over reaction me thinks as I know Mitch Boehm...........who is as conservative as Reagan, whom he met once
not abuse- just FRiendly ribbing. :)
i’m a honda/ kaw guy myself.
Much ado about nothing. It’s a comment in passing, and I find it more likely that the author used the word “ambiguous”, although erroneously to express the polarization of public sentiment over the war, and not a judgment on the war itself.
Interesting. I traded a Honda Shadow for the Sportster but I've always been a Suziki guy and I really really admire the venerable Yamaha 650 special.
all too big for my taste, i like little ones. i’ve got a 70’s cb350 and cl450. my “big” bike is an inheirited 68 650w2tt- which is mostly just taking up room in my garage (hasn’t been ridden in probably 20 years, needs full restoration).
i’ve been on a couple harleys and other cruisers, as well as crotch rockets. those big bikes just don’t feel comfortable to me.
Are you a small person physically? I have a friend that said that he is not a strong person which is why he keeps away from bigger motorcycles.
Can you post a little more of the article so we can better understand the context?
I won’t be reading that issue. Not too long ago Mitch Bohem was replaced as editor of motorcyclist magazine. They added some drunken retard as a writer and increased the harley bashing (I don’t ride a harley, I just find this childish) The magazine quickly turned to a bucket of s#!t. I’ve read motorcyclist for my whole riding career, a little more than 20 years. This new editor put me off of it in just a few months.
Yup, Harley Rice.
The new Buell racer doesn't even use a Harley engine... It uses a Rotax.

I always liked the XLCR (Excelsior), but the Harley people hated them, and they sold about 11 of them. Today they're something of a collectors item.

Mitch stepped down as editor not long ago. They now have some English fop with rather faggoty long hair running things. He seems to be very impressed with himself with all the gratuitous posing he does in photos.
I suspect any drift in the former tone of the magazine (very anti big government and revenue enhancement) is due to this clown taking over.
Pasta-Burner!
