So Sabato argues for every liberal/leftist idea that will keep democrats in power because up until last election cycle they could not win any elections?! Why does'nt he just come out and say that we should make a new constitution where you can't be elected if you are a Republican. This guy is actually arguing against my civil liberties? What a shameful person!

I can't believe this guy actually proclaims that he is a moderate and I believed him at one time.

The Constitution is broken, but the last people I would trust to fix it are the idiots currently in charge, who are the very ones who broke it in the first place.

What they should do is ban the federal government from doing anything other than providing for the national defense & war-making power, border control, and the common currency. Let the states do the rest. Leave in the Bill of Rights, but leave it up to the States to enforce it.

What I would like to see is move the Electoral College to the state level. Each county is worth one electoral vote. Whoever wins the county, wins that vote. The votes of all the counties are summed and whichever candidate wins the most counties, wins that States eletoral votes for the Presidential election. That way, one or two cities within the state, along with a couple counties, will not be able to control the future of that state.

The Constitution is broken...

With the exceptions of the 16th and 17th Amendments, I disagree with you. Government is broken, not the Constitution. If followed, we could rectify all of our ills.

Of all the proposals I have read on revising the Electoral College... yours deserves the greatest consideration. Good job.

The Constitution is broken...

No it isn't but we the people who allow our elected leaders to pay little or no attention to it definitely are a problem!

Sabato somehow got a “name” and became an “expert”, similarly to Juan Williams - neither has much if any substance and I don’t pay much attention to them.

I wrote an article for the Journal of the American Academy of Actuaries, analyzing the difference between two versions of Electoral College voting. It covered the elections from Dwight Eisenhower forward. It compared the College votes under the current winner-take-all system, and the District voting system, in which each Congressional District chose its own Elector.

In almost all cases, the College vote moved closer to the popular vote result. The only result that would have been changed was, surprisingly, that Richard Nixon would have defeated John Kennedy.

That article has previously been posted on FreeRepublic.

Here's my announcement of running for Congress in 2008.

The Constitution isn’t broken; the people who manage its powers ARE.

Sabato shows the typical empty-headed conceit that infects the liberal circles.

Your points about the two Amendments is correct. Cheers to you (with my cup of Lipton) this morning!

Each county is worth one electoral vote. Whoever wins the county...

There is a danger in shifting the power too far the other direction. We have a good example in North Carolina, where the small eastern counties and cities vote against what they call "the Great State of Mecklenburg" (Charlotte). We can't get our fair share of road money or adequate funds to run the courts because the legislature is stacked against us (an alliance of rural and liberal Democrats). The eastern part of the state has the best roads with the least traffic because that's where the power sends the money.

I’ll agree that the Constitution is broken, when we see the results of the country actually following its plain language.

Since that has yet to happen in my lifetime, I don’t see the point in changing something we’re not adhering to anyway.

Any attempt to rewrite the Constitution would result in a 20,000+ page maze of contradictions ressembling our current tax code.

Sabato can now be declared a certifiable idiot.

“larry sabato doesn’t understand the constitution.”

he also doesn’t understand “progressive” tyranny, but on the other hand he may be part of it.

Leave in the Bill of Rights, but leave it up to the States to enforce it.

I think that issue was settled with the civil war.

Sabato would probably want the right to abortion on demand written into the Constitution, and for it to mandate that 10% of Congress must be homosexuals.
