It would be great if they could seize Nagin’s office and assets as well.

Mayor Ray Nagin on Tuesday reiterated that the city would not pay the judgment . . .

Having tried a case in Louisiana once (and ONLY once), I know that LA law can be more than a little squirrelly.

But, does the city have a CHOICE? Ordinarily when a judgment against a municipality (including its departments, like the PD) is final, the city fathers have to cough up the money from somewhere, or the plaintiff's attorney will start attaching police cars and file cabinets and selling them on the courthouse steps . . .

Mayor Ray Nagin on Tuesday reiterated that the city would not pay the judgment, saying it could not afford it and that it would set a bad precedent.

After Nagins gun grab and delaying tactics I would love to see the ex-employees remodel city hall. :>)

“Jordan lost the discrimination lawsuit against dozens of his former employees in 2005. The white former employees said they were fired by Jordan, who is black, because of their race.”

If I am not mistaken, he came into office saying that was what he intended to do. I may be thinking about somewhere else, but I’m pretty sure it was NO.

A look at the career of New Orleans DA Eddie Jordan

1952 _ Eddie Jordan is born in Fort Campbell, Ky., and grows up in the Pontchartrain Park neighborhood of New Orleans. He graduates from St. Augustine High School, attends Wesleyan University and Rutgers School of Law

1980s _ Jordan returns to Louisiana to teach at Southern University Law Center, and then spends several years in private law practice.

1984 _ He's appointed an assistant U.S. Attorney.

1994 _ On the recommendation of Congressman William Jefferson, President Bill Clinton appoints Jordan as U.S. Attorney _ the first African American U.S. Attorney

2001 _ Jordan leaves office.

2002 _ Jordan is elected Orleans Parish District Attorney, replacing Harry Connick Sr., who held the position for almost 30 years. Early in his tenure, he terminates as many as 70 employees, mostly white, replacing most of them with black employees.

March 2005 _ A federal court case ends with a $3.7 million judgment against Jordan's office.

January 2007 _ Thousands march on City Hall, demaning better police protection and more criminal convictions.

May 2007 _ Judge threatens to release 20 suspects because Jordan's office took too long to bring their cases to trial.

June 2007 _ Jordan is criticized for dropping charges against David Bond, a suspect in death of Hot 8 Brass Band drummer Dineral Shavers. Jordan said the main witness refused to testify. He also drops charges against Michael Anderson, who was accused in the deaths of five teenagers a year earlier.

July 2007 _ council member asks him to resign; mayor threatens to ask the state attorney general to investigate Jordan's office.

August 2007 _ A grand jury indicts both Bond and Anderson.

October 2007 _ Robbery suspect Elton Phillips goes to Jordan's home seeking help. Jordan said he didn't know the suspect, but later explains that his girlfriend knew him and his family.

October 2007 _ Jordan asks the city to cover the discrimination judgment. When the city leans against bailing him out, he turns to the state for help.

Oct. 30 2007 _ Jordan announces his decision to resign from office, thus ending his 14 year career in public office.
