There is no reason to. Most airlines would prefer the flexibility of mid-sized aircraft for international routes, as they can easily be transitioned between routes based on landing capacity (not every airport can handle the A380) or demand (you can't always fill a 747 or A380).

Still waiting to see what they will do with the A350 program.

Already airlines(other than American ones) have made orders and have plans for A380 and airports have been adjustments to cater for A380. American airlines are as usual left behind and play catch up. The demand for A380 would be in long haul international routes where passengers would expect extra comfort and willing to pay for it.

True. Air Canada never had more than nine 747s in their fleet but they have dozens of 767s and a large number of A330s and A340s.

Airbus designed this line to straddle the 787 up to 777 in size, but in making it a bigger aircraft, they have left the smaller 787-8 with no competitor. However, they are starting to show some success since the larger A350 compares very well with the 777-200/300 series.

It will be up to Boeing to respond. If they don't, the A350 will eventually kill the 777 line so I believe they will stretch the 787 to compete.
