Alex Rodriguez opted out of his $252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday in what appears to be the end of his tumultuous career with New York.
Rodriguez's decision, announced by agent Scott Boras as the rival Boston Red Sox completed their World Series sweep of Colorado, makes the third baseman eligible to become a free agent.
Boras said he attempted to notify Yankees general manager Brian Cashman of the decision but couldn't reach him, so he left a voice mail.
"He was traveling and I was traveling," Boras said.
Rodriguez loses the final $72 million in guaranteed salary in the record contract, which he signed with Texas before the 2001 season. The Yankees lose $21.3 million in remaining payments from the Rangers, a subsidy agreed to at the time of his 2004 trade. New York has said it would not attempt to re-sign A-Rod if he opted out.
Boras said during a telephone interview that Rodriguez made his choice because he was uncertain whether Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte would return to the Yankees. Boras said it became clear that the others wouldn't make a decision by Rodriguez's deadline to opt out -- 10 days after the World Series.

That was classy of him to wait until the day the Red Sox win the World Series to make this announcment. /s
LOL .. and how ‘bout Boras leaving the
message on voicemail? Did it HAVE to
be done tonight ? The air must be pretty
thin up there, of not.
of not = if not
mike lowell is a free agent in boston. how would a-rod look on that team?
I think Boston would be more inclined to re-sign Lowell. Still, they could take A-Rod just to flip off the Yankees.
Popular destinations: Boston, Los Angeles Angels. Dark horse candidates: Chicago Cubs, Florida.
Many contracts expire when the W.S. is completed.
They’re not wasting any time.
he’d look great at SS with Lowell at 3rd
Being that the Cubs are in the process of being sold, it seems unlikely to me that they would make any move toward A-Rod.
I’m a Giants fan, and I have some very mixed emotions about bringing in A-Rod. The Giants need to get younger and need a bat in the lineup that isn’t under the age of frickin’ 60. The rotation is fine, but I would like to get a closer or some help in the bullpen, which is something this team has lacked over the past few seasons.
(Hell, maybe Brian Sabean could get his long-awaited do-over and trade to get Joe Nathan back?)
After seeing on the news what (Hank) Steinbrenner had to say, why would anyone want to play for that idiot other than for money? A-Rod goes out and gives them an MVP season and all they do is heap slime all over him. Low class descends to no class. They need Manny Ramirez. I think they Yankees and Manny would be a perfect match.
The Yankees are going to announce that Joe Girardi will be their new manager. He will evaluate the talent the team has and in short order get rid of the prima donnas and will help put together a talented young team in short order.
A-Rod is like many very good players that are a cancer to the team. It is a team, not an individual sport.
You belong in some nutso ward if you think the cheap turd that owns the Marlins will pay that much for this self absorbed pain in the rear.
Sounds like a perfect fit, a-rod and Mark Cuban. Two very big fat heads.
If he were 15 years older, the Pirates would take an option on him.
I wonder if he will try to play SS again, or stay at 3rd base.
Loria’s done crazier things.
My fearless prediction?.... I think he'll end up in L.A. (angels or dodgers)
