Just 10 months into his first term in elected office, James Webb found himself on the podium for one of the most coveted speaking slots in Democratic politics.
The freshman senator from Virginia delivered the keynote address to the New Hampshire Democratic Party at its annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner a week ago, a role that in recent years has been played by current and former White House candidates John Edwards and John Kerry. Two years ago the speech was delivered by Sen. Evan Bayh, who is viewed as a potential vice presidential pick next year....
Direct and withering when talking about war, Webb can be awkward when the subject turns to his political ambitions -- particularly the vice presidential chatter that erupted shortly after he took office in January.
"This is like the conundrum -- there's no good answer," Webb said, laughing nervously. "I'm not in any way actively interested in doing that. Nobody is asking me about it, either."
Webb's political appeal is based on the fact that the combat veteran, acclaimed novelist and former Republican figured out how to unlock a conservative state with an antiwar populism that spoke to small-town and rural voters as well as the Democratic base. As Democrats seek to widen their majorities in Congress next year, Webb is much in demand as a fundraiser and campaigner...
Observers are divided on whether Webb's bluntness will be an asset or a disqualifier when the eventual Democratic nominee picks a running mate.
"Nobody can remember a freshman making the national impact he's made on his party," said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato.
Presidential scholar Stephen Hess said, "At this point, where it's 100% speculation, there's nothing wrong with putting his name on the list." But he added: "He's an unguided missile. He'd be too unpredictable."

One of the signers of the Declaration of Intimidation of and innocent American is not fit to run for dog catcher in a free republic.
I think she will avoid him because he would move the ticket to the left. He wouldn't help her win a state that she would have trouble with, so I think she'll go for someone who would.
Also, rumor has it that she doesn't particularly like him.
On the one hand, I can't imagine her running with someone who is pro-life. OTOH, I can imagine her doing anything to win.
VP for the Angry A$$hole party ?
Dead weight.
"Sure, I'd run with Hillary. It's not like I haven't run with her before."
and...Webb's appeal to the Virginia Arab voters!
The Arab vote helped give Webb the Senate win in Virginia. (50,000 extra votes for Webb///Webb won by 20,000 or so I think)
And the Arab vote helped Democrat Tim Kaine defeat Republican Jerry W. Kilgore in 2005.
Now extrapolate this to the fifty states in '08 and how the Arabs might go all out for Hillary. :(

(Calpernia, you are an expert at finding links/posts, can you help me find this Arab/Webb/Virgina thread here. I remember seeing it, but can't find it now. Anyone know how to find this thread. I believe it was posted here at fr this past Spring/found this one via google)
Can any of you help me find an earlier Webb/Virginia/vote thread. I spent about half an hour searching but to no avail. My post #47.
The main reason Webb won in Virginia is because Allen couldn’t keep his mouth shut.
I was a big fan of Webb back in the day but this transfer of parties didn’t set well with me but I completely lost ANY SEMBLANCE OF RESPECT for him when he left his aid ‘hanging’ over that hand gun episode. A good Marine doesn’t sell his peers out and then abandon him....
All thanks to Allen. If you're going to run for the Presidency mere months later, you don't run for re-election of your Senate seat. That had to be one of the dumbest decisions in political history.
No way - he’s a loose cannon.
How about you guys/help find that fr Webb/Arab/voter thread//my #47. Thanks.
Meantime, about that 'Arab vote'. . .and Muslim vote - and iImigrants et al. Repubs cannot compete easily here; as they will never reach so low - be as accomodating - as a competing Demrat.
(But surely, there are many who come here for a 'better life'; not a repeat of the one they left behind. . .)
Bttt
Webb won by only 9K votes.
We can thank the Washington Post for going out of its way to confirm and talk ad infinitum about Allen’s Jewish heritage. I believe I’ve read that the Muslims usually vote about 2-1 in favor of the RATS. This time they voted 9-1 in favor of them. That alone gave Webb the election.
I think you’ve nailed it! The “macaca” incident with Allen, that the WA Compost kept going on and on about certainly made Northern VA (lots of immigrants - legal and illegal and lots of libs from away living there too) go even bluer than usual. Webb is a pompous blowhard. I would not be one bit surprised about illegal invader voting in Arlington and Fairfax counties, considering that the “leadership” in both counties are as pandering and “sanctuary” oriented as any illegal could dream about.
You may be confusing meanness and mental instability.
I think she will avoid him because the clintons aren't stupid enough to put a #2 on the ticket that could possibly outshine them, or attract more attention than them. thus, the arguably organic al gore.
kerry erred in picking edwards, but only because kerry was even more of a corpse than gore.
