(John) Edwards tussles with journalism school

A UNC-Chapel Hill professor says John Edwards' presidential campaign tried to kill a student's video story about the campaign's headquarters. In an interview with State Government Radio, Associate Professor C.A. Tuggle said that he received phone calls from two top staffers for the former North Carolina senator.

The journalism professor said the staffers threatened to cut off access to Edwards to all UNC student groups if the student-run television program aired a segment critical of the location of the Chapel Hill headquarters.

"I'm dumbfounded by it," Tuggle told the radio station. "I can't imagine that a national campaign would spend this much time and effort trying to squash a story that's on a campus newscast that will be seen by, at most, a couple of thousand viewers."

The two-and-a-half minute segment quotes an Edwards volunteer and a columnist for the campus newspaper on Edwards' choice of the posh Southern Village shopping center for his headquarters.

In the video, James Edward Dillard, a columnist for The Daily Tar Heel, says that the location conflicts with Edwards' campaign goal of reducing poverty in America.

"To pick that place as your campaign center, when you're going to be the man who advocates on behalf of the poor, I just think, why not turn the media's attention to somewhere where there are huge, huge problems," he said.

The Edwards campaign could not be reached for comment this morning.

The piece is scheduled to air Monday on the student program, Carolina Week. It's also available on YouTube: the video.

He can "care" about the poor without having to actually be around them, sheeesh. They're really, really icky, after all.

...Gee Whiz, you can’t Mr. Tuggle? I don’t know if this “Tuggle” guy is a lib or a conservative but chances he’s a lib and surely he knows that squashing and threatening any bad press for a lib candidate is business as usual.

Clearly the Edwards dopes haven’t figured out that trying to kill a story in the age of the internet is the surest way of getting it infinitely more attention.

Silly students. Everyone knows Democrats get prior restraint simply by asking for it. What are they thinking? < / sarcasm>

Its not serious til the campaign sends out The Big E (Elisabeth Edwards) to fight the battle...(chuckle)

Another mistake by the Breck Girl here. He just can’t help looking like a girlie man....because, well...he is a girlie man.

Welcome to the DemocRAT party, Prof. Tuggle! You DO realize they don't really believe in FREEDOM OF SPEECH, now, do you?!

I love it. Edwards goons try to crush a story that would be no surprise to anyone with half a brain and turn it into a nationally exposed story that includes strong arm tactics to get their way.

The Breck Girl hasn’t a chance in this election and Edwards knows it. He’s in it for the ego trip and money. The moneyu is easier to get through contributions and caviar fund raisers than having to actually work and sue someone.

Well, the hottie info babe in training in the video — “Carla Bab”, if that is her real name — is destined for PMSNBC at worst, FNC at best: odd that the Edwards kid begins by saying that The Breck Girl’s HQ is unique because it’s NOT in Washington then says it does not matter where the HQ is...typical Edwardian Double Speak...he’s learned well. Still, one has to wonder WHY the Edwards campaign would have a problem with this unless Edwards is banging the aforementioned reporterette....nah, his wife wouldn’t let him do that now would she?

i love how the edwards worker says, "having his headquarters in chapel hill shows that edwards is truly a candidate of the people and not a DC politician."

and then when challenged on the location due to the affluent neighborhood, the same kid says, "the location of the headquarters means nothing in terms of the candidate."

can't have it both ways, dummy.
