Outrage: Verizon Wireless wants to sell your personally identifiable data: here’s how you can stop this

Last week, it was revealed that Verizon Wireless is mailing a notice advising wireless subscribers that if they fail to Opt Out within 30 days, Verizon will begin SELLING their Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI) to “third parties and affiliates”.

CPNI information includes all the calls you place or receive on your cell phone (along with date, time and call duration). Verizon intends to allow “targeted ads” created by their affiliates sent to your phone.

What if you have paperless billing? I have received no notice. It will be interesting to see how this plays out...

The author puts “third parties” in quotes but the announcement does not mention “third parties” at all. It does reference affiliates, subsidiaries and parent companies. I’m not saying that’s good or bad, but the author deliberately misquotes Verizon to fit his screed.

A Verizon rep told me that they cannot withhold the info unless they have a written response from the user. They make people fill out the forms when they buy a phone but 3rd party sellers don’t bother with the process, opening up their buyers to the marketers.

I didn’t get a clear answer about why they had to release the info. I wonder if it is a government thing.

They sent it out apart from the mailing; we have wireless billing, too (which I hate). You may have thrown it out because it looked like one of these plain brochures that advises you of your privacy rights. I almost did and happened to just look at it. I was very surprised, but called the number immediately to stop it. And it didn’t automatically cover each phone on the family plan—I had to dial in each number to get it stopped.

Did you read the letter at the linked site? I don't find the use of the 3rd party incorrect at all. What is an 'agent' as used in the letter? Seems exceedingly vague and 3rd party-ish, if you ask me.

Get the names and addresses of the Verizon top executives and post that information somewhere. Include photos of their homes.

I called the number - it's an automated system that wants your phone #, last 4 SSAN, and billing ZIP code.

I opted out for both my phone and my wife's.

Still, it IS outrageous that they would think of doing this.

I was not happy about it. I too almost threw out the notice as junk mail, but I read it and called the number to opt out from each phone.

My own name on Zaba shows my 5 previous addresses but not the one I’ve lived at since April of this year.

It also shows my sister’s birthdate off by 20 years.

Interesting site, but way off. Doesn’t include my most recent address and listed my previous address 3 years after I moved there.

A co-worker is only listed once at an address where she never actually lived. made an offer almost 4 years ago but it fell through. No other record of her.
