BATON ROUGE - As the California wildfires continued to rage Thursday, so too did the political feud between President Bush and Gov. Kathleen Blanco that has smoldered since the federal government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina.
The latest flare-up came when Bush, while touring the California disaster area, took an apparent swipe at Blanco's post-Katrina leadership as he complimented California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"It makes a significant difference when you have somebody in the statehouse willing to take the lead," Bush said, according to the Associated Press.
The president's statement, coming from a White House that seems determined to avoid a repeat in California of the public-relations disaster that followed Katrina, brought a swift response from Blanco.
In a statement forwarded by her press office, Blanco noted that it took federal forces nearly a week to arrive in Louisiana after the storm. "I was the only game in town, leading for nearly a week without the president's help," Blanco said.
"Of all the lessons learned from Katrina now being put into place in California, I would hope the one he would remember is that politics has no place in any disaster," she added, before taking a shot at the slow manner in which promised federal aid has been delivered.

I guess "swipe" is the new left buzz work for truth.
Thanks, meant it a figure of speech since from my POV any number between 2 & 7 years would've worked for making a valid point.
Nevertheless I completely understand your quest for precision, accuracy.
More often than not, we Wisconsinites?
...we're like that. :o)
And why those who are genuinely affected appreciate him...
Yup. In my opinion it is the press that has done so much to hurt our Country.
The press framed Katrina just the way they wanted. Had Bush stepped in earlier, they would’ve complained about Federal gestapo tactics and not letting the people of the state help themselves, and Bush trying to politicize a disaster, etc, etc (just like they are now in California).
The sad part is we saw it happen right before our very eyes and now they’re trying to do it again. We need to compete better in this war of words. So far, the Republicans barely even show up. Like you, I try to talk to people and give them the real facts, but it’s hard to compete against a teary-eyed, vengeful leftist talking head that gets to blather unchallenged before millions at a time.
The driveby media/main stream media/press of this country is the single biggest reason anyone even votes for a democrat today.
Excuse me but I watch the weather in the Gulf pretty closely since I do waterborne business to customers from Panama City to Sunshine to Houston. There was plenty of evidence of a big blow a full week prior.
BOO-YAH!
I guess I’ll just watch out for snakes — the sneaky little f%ckers
A cat 5 aimed at N.O. more than a week out? You could see that? You’re pretty good then. I live down here and I didn’t see it and believe me, I pay attention.
‘In a statement forwarded by her press office, Blanco noted that it took federal forces nearly a week to arrive in Louisiana after the storm. “I was the only game in town, leading for nearly a week without the president’s help,” Blanco said. ‘
Apparently the voters of louisiana disagreed with you to such a level you are no longer viable politically, you moron.
Some of us remember you telling the President ‘I need 24 hours to think about it’.
What part of Wisconsin are you from? I'm near Green Bay.
I suppose those were tooth fairies plucking thousands of people off of rooftops before the storm had even moved completely out.
She also had a press conference where she was crying. She obviously had no clue what to do next. All she "knew" was NOT to cede power to Bush. He was shocked she wanted no help at the time.
I can't believe they haven't used the video against her. At the time it was on TV, I said "Look at that! The Governor is crying! She has no clue what to do!" Not really something to bolster your opinion of leadership in a disaster. Bush had already called to nationalize the NG, but they told him to get lost. Then the water came in and they blamed Bush. Bush was a wimp, IMHO, for not drilling them with facts. He just stood there and took it. Even after the storm, Miss. was back on its feet in a few months and NO is still sitting there as their "chocolate city" 2 years later.
HA!!!
You don't know me very well, huh? ;^)
"It would be one thing if the other side would take the same track, but they have done nothing but attack him since day one and his inability to fight the fight has left him and our country seriously weakened."
I'd agree with your take, essentially.
I still cannot believe how the man's been dogged for whatever he was accused of doing, never-mind anything he actually did.
It's been a surreal 7 years, for sure.
FWIW *&* for the record I've no gripe with this POTUS.
Not insofar as the economy or the WOT goes, anyway.
One would have to admit those are the two items the Liberal-Socialists & their lapdog quisling mediots have pounded on almost from day 1.
Whatever grievance I have lies in the arena of domestic policy, ie CFR etc.
No matter, it is what it is.
'08 promises to be one of the most interesting elections in my lifetime, so looking ahead to '08's what I'm focused on, not GWBush per se.
"What part of Wisconsin are you from?"
Wayne Township, about 25 miles south of Fond du Lac.
(I've a dear old friend who lived in De Pere, now in Lawrence so am up there a few times a year)
"I'm near Green Bay."
A beautiful place with its own NFL team, does it get any better than that?
We especially enjoy viewing the bay from the Door County peninsula.
Are you by any chance a charter boat owner/captain?
If so drop me a Freepmail, perhaps we can do business?
John Gillespie has been hollering about the great Pike & Walleye fishing on the bay for a couple Saturday morning episodes this year, so it must be outstanding.
Sure would *love* some Walleyes.
...just need a way into the bay. ;^)
If I were a Repub ad writer I would show the SOTUnion message from Bush when the Dems stood and applauded ( Hillary is shown grinning and clapping)after Bush mentioned the failed vote to "privatize" a portion of the SS fund. Then show the level of the DOW on that day. Then show the level of the DOW today. End with the question "How much has your SS check gone up since the Dems defeated Bush's SS fix? The DOW has almost doubled since Bush took office. It won't go in a straight line, but it will most likely beat 2% a year. Even a Bond fund would beat the SS raise.
I wonder if they have filled Rove's position yet? I'm retired and available.
It doesn’t hurt, either, that when the people in California are told to get out of the area, they get out of the area. Quite different from the Katrina people who ignored all warnings, and waited for Big Brother Government to come and lead them out by the hand.
K-Ville's pilot episode featured a white villain who was using pseudo-Blackwater mercenaries to scare to poor black folks away from their homes in the Lower 9th Ward, so said villain could buy up the land. I half expected to see Ray Nagin credited as a writer.
I know I'll get slammed for bringing illegal immigration into a CA wildfires thread but....
The only problems we've had with any "looting" or taking advantage of the situation are from illegals. Illegals we backing up their pickups at one of the Qualcomm exits and loading up with supplies. A citizen stopped them and police called the Border Patrol. Handled....Done....
And that's the truth so it does fit with this thread!
Totally agree.
Thanks for your service in the AF. All Americans who love liberty appreciate it.
I love your ideas! I think you should apply to the RNC and amybe you can shape them up! LOL
