From that article, it sounds like he's teaching third-graders not to hate or belittle others. I wouldn't go after him with brass knuckles or a tire iron for that.

I sure wouldn't want him teaching my child though. I do have a big problem with anyone but myself or my husband telling our daughter about gays . I think its good to teach children not to bully but I am not for teaching children that young its ok to be gay. Not in any way shape or form. There is no need for it at that age. School should be for learning & somethings ought to be left to the parent to decide when to tell their children about it. Just like I am against birth control pills for 11 yr olds. I don't want my child's teacher deciding when & what she can teach my child about sex/gays etc and I made sure the principal & teacher got it in writing. Schools are taking too much upon themselves IMHO and I think parents better step up & voice their opinions. I have no problem doing so.

Even within a district. My kids were in a public school that we liked. Then our district closed it. My daughters went to 2 public schools in the district, and then we gave up and put them in private.

I think a lot of it is the principal, teachers, and parents for an area. If any of those things is lacking, then the school can be horrible.

James Hartline is very interesting. Hartline spent over 20 of the last 24 years in prison, for multiple burglary convictions. Hartline also has had a long history of drug abuse, including IV injection of methamphetamine. Hartline would most likely be considered to be a habitual criminal with an anti-social personality, and could most probably be classified as sociopathic or psychopathic.

A person might believe that Hartline is entering politics, in the belief that as an elected official, steal with impunity.

I don’t want the gay agenda in any school but after raising 5 older children & seeing what goes on in the schools I am sickened.

Twice so far in our middle schools there have been incidents of girls caught under the lunch room tables giving oral sex. I think parents better wake up & do something fast about their children & what they do.

When my second to the youngest, was a senior a gay kept making comments about his rear. He knew my son was NOT GAY yet he kept it up. School official's did nothing. One day my son had enough & punched him out. My son was suspended but wasn’t in trouble here at home. I don’t like violence but I am sick to death of the gays getting away with all they do. According to my son there were openly bisexuals & gays in his school. I feel if you want to be gay you ought to keep it private & out of the school. I still am trying to get my husband to agree to home school. All I see are plenty of problems if our daughter stays in public school.

And to this day, I’m not really sure what I’m allowed to say.

What? Doesn't *Ask your parents* cut it anymore?

Homeschooling is waaaaaay cheaper than private Christian school, which was one of many factors in our decision to homeschool.

Tuition for my two girls is $5500. I can make more than that mowing yards part time, so it is hard to see how giving up the average job to homeschool would be cheaper.

I agree with the sentiment, but parents should keep in mind that “Christian School” is not always the aw-shucks wholesome environment some think it is.

Indeed. Names in titles are not authoritative. My wife and I chose from three Catholic schools in our area, and we continue to be very involved in the school and in our girls' daily teachings.

That said, our discussion focus on fellow student's failures of conscience, not teachers who are pushing the homosexual agenda.

I agree. Unfortunately our public schools have become indoctrination centers instead of places where children learn academics

There’s so much anxiety about how to talk to kids about sex and sexuality. How do you walk that line so that it’s age-appropriate?

In the third grade the only appropriate thing to say on the subject is that it's not appropriate for you to talk about it with them.

After reading the article you linked in post #14 there is no doubt in my mind this guy should be out of the classroom. Third graders do not have the experience to understand what "I will not discriminate" means or this BS...

"My question always goes out to third graders: Where would you like to be in the history books, if you had some chance to change it all, to change slavery or the Japanese internment camps, or women's right to vote? Third graders have a strong sense of justice."

Sure, they have a strong sense of justice. But they have no knowledge of those issues or the mental and emotional preparation to process all that. This guy is a real mental case and the article is full of clues to his inability to think consistently or coherently. He radically contradicts himself.

The real seminal event was when my close friend from high school came out to me in 11th grade or so. ... He just said, "Mick, I'm gay." And I said, okay. OK, cool. It didn't seem all that momentous at the time. ... What wound up happening was -- and this is kind of a curse -- I feel I owe it to him, and to other LGBT people in my life, not to look the other way. ... I need to be able to sleep at night.

It wasn't a big deal when he was a kid but now it's such a big deal he can't sleep unless he does something about it. He's the one making it a big deal. Get a net!

I haven’t seen Christian school that inexpensive, even for one. We spent a couple hundred dollars/year max on curriculum vs. several thousand per kid for private Christian school.

And for the most part, homeschooling is done by the moms who don’t work anyway. You save more in doing your own shopping and cooking, and other household chores that double income families pay for.

The choice is, I can go to work to pay to send my kids to school so I don’t see them all day or come up about the same financially without the job or Christian school to pay for plus the aggravation of dealing with taking off work for sick kids, days off, doctor appts, etc. not to count the extra spent on work clothes, gas, eating out and other convenience food, babysitting, and maybe housecleaning (which seems to be getting popular in many circles these days.

Tuition for my two girls is $5500.

That's a very low tuition. In my state, many homeowners pay at least that much in school tax alone. School tax alone for the other homeowners is nearing that amount, when the property tax is broken down.

If they'd let us keep more of our money, more of us could afford private schools.

Of course, homeschooling is even cheaper. For my three kids, the most I've ever spent in homeschooling was $800 total in one year, and that included classes and museum memberships, too.

Indeed it is low. I pay more for public schools via my property taxes than I pay for two private tuitions. And the actual spending in public school is almost double what I pay in tuition per child.

Of course, homeschooling is even cheaper.

Depends on how you look at it. If I were to home-school my 7 and 9 year olds, it would cost me about $70,000 a year in lost revenue, plus books and material.

Catholic schools tend much less than others. And for the most part, homeschooling is done by the moms who don’t work anyway. You save more in doing your own shopping and cooking, and other household chores that double income families pay for.

That depends on income. My wife makes more than me, so it would be logical for me to home-school, if we chose to. Currently I get them ready, drop-off, and pick-up. Around this I run my own business. I don't make as much as I would if I put in longer days, but it is worth it to us to have more parental contact.

Before I had my own business, we had an au pair and it was cost effective for us, although it was very expensive. Understandably everyone's situation is different.

I think home-schooling is great, and it would definitely be a choice for us if there were not a good, affordable, private option available.
