Turkish Troops Kill 64 Suspected Rebels Near Iraq Border
Thursday , October 25, 2007
ANKARA, Turkey
Turkey is running out of patience and will not tolerate Kurdish rebels' use of Iraqi soil to launch terrorist attacks, President Abdullah Gul said Thursday.
Turkey has threatened to stage an incursion into northern Iraq if Iraqi Kurds and U.S.-led coalition forces do not crack down on Kurdish rebels based there.
Turkish troops have killed at least 64 suspects rebels this week, including more than 30 poised to attack a military unit on the border on Tuesday, Turkey's military said Thursday.
A pair of warplanes were spotted flying from northern Iraq back into Turkey, a day after Turkish warplanes reportedly pounded rebel positions along the border.
"We are totally determined to take all the necessary steps to end this threat," Gul said before a visit by a high-level Iraqi delegation.
Turkey's top leadership, seeking to put pressure on Iraq's Kurds to act against the rebels, has called for economic measures against Iraq. The self-ruling Kurdish administration in Iraq's north relies heavily on Turkish investment.
Ankara is "expecting them to come with concrete proposals otherwise, the visit will have no meaning," Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said.
An adviser to the Iraqi delegation said the two sides would first try to find a solution. The delegation is headed by Defense Minister Abdul-Qader al-Obeidi, and will include Minister of State for National Security Sherwan al-Waili, said Yassin Majid, adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
"The political choice will be the first solution to solve the crisis. The Iraqi government insists on dialogue and cooperation to solve the crisis," Majid said.
Iraq has promised to shut down offices used by rebel bases.

Good, send in the termination team to exterminate the Marxist-Leninist Soviet creation PKK.
Yes, he is in the slammer.
Shame that we can’t show the same resolve to go after the terrorist sanctuaries in Iran and Syria.
Go Turkey! Let’s get in there an help crush the PKK, so we can restore stability to the oil markets.
What do you expect with a fairy like Robert Gates running the show, and drumming out real leaders like General Pace for not endorsing sodomy?
On the other hand, being in Gitmo or Abu Ghraib is twenty trillion times worse than anything that's ever happened or going to happen to anybody throughout human history. well researched liberal opinion you can take to the bank
