At the age of eighty-eight, after four children and a long and respected career as one of the twentieth century's most influential scientists, James Lovelock has come to an unsettling conclusion: The human race is doomed. "I wish I could be more hopeful," he tells me one sunny morning as we walk through a park in Oslo, where he is giving a talk at a university. Lovelock is a small man, unfailingly polite, with white hair and round, owlish glasses. His step is jaunty, his mind lively, his manner anything but gloomy. In fact, the coming of the Four Horsemen -- war, famine, pestilence and death -- seems to perk him up. "It will be a dark time," Lovelock admits. "But for those who survive, I suspect it will be rather exciting."
In Lovelock's view, the scale of the catastrophe that awaits us will soon become obvious. By 2020, droughts and other extreme weather will be commonplace. By 2040, the Sahara will be moving into Europe, and Berlin will be as hot as Baghdad. Atlanta will end up a kudzu jungle. Phoenix will become uninhabitable, as will parts of Beijing (desert), Miami (rising seas) and London (floods). Food shortages will drive millions of people north, raising political tensions. "The Chinese have nowhere to go but up into Siberia," Lovelock says. "How will the Russians feel about that? I fear that war between Russia and China is probably inevitable." With hardship and mass migrations will come epidemics, which are likely to kill millions. By 2100, Lovelock believes, the Earth's population will be culled from today's 6.6 billion to as few as 500 million, with most of the survivors living in the far latitudes -- Canada, Iceland, Scandinavia, the Arctic Basin....

"Lovelock knows that predicting the end of civilization is not an exact science. "I could be wrong about all this," he admits as we stroll around the park in Norway. "The trouble is, all those well-intentioned scientists who are arguing that we're not in any imminent danger are basing their arguments on computer models. I'm basing mine on whats actually happening."

he’s eighty eight years of age...knows his time is short, and if he’s gunna die, he wants everyone else to die too.
I agree with ya, that he’s a maroon.... LoL!
However, thinking a bit more, I come to the realization that this kook is less dangerous than al gore & his ilk.
On a positive note, this elderly “scientist” isnt demanding immediate action by world govt’s to intrude into our lives. He’s just saying there’s nothing we can do, so bend over and be ready.....
Bizarre. By the age of 88, this “eminent scientist” must have lived through the 1960s when his liberal buddies were predicting that there would be massive death, starvation and extinction of humans by the 1980s. Did he just forget about that?
War? That’s so old fashionned. The Chinese will buy what they need.
Seriously, even if this guy’s weather forecasting is 100% accurate, the effects he presumed are ridiculous.

He started it! He’s responsible for the ‘Gia Hypothesis’
James Lovelock is an independent atmospheric scientist who lives and works deep in the English countryside. He has a knack for making discoveries of global significance. Lovelock is the inventor of the electron capture detector, a palm-size chamber that detects man-made chemicals in minute concentrations. In the late 1950s, his detector was used to demonstrate that pesticide residues were present in virtually all species on Earth, from penguins in Antarctica to mother's milk in the United States. This provided the hard data for Rachel Carson's landmark 1962 environmental book, "The Silent Spring," which launched the international campaign to ban the pesticide DDT.
In the late 1960s, Lovelock sailed from Britain to Antarctica and with his detector discovered the ubiquitous presence of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), man-made gases now known to deplete the stratospheric ozone layer...
Though I will give him credit, he's one of the very few Global Warming believers that is actually a big proponent of Nuclear Power
NEWS FLASH!!!
Every single one of the billions of people alive today...
Are Going To Die!
Give him another Nobel Peach prize, this junk must be coontageous.

Are Going To Die!
Errr......maybe not! 1st Thessalonians 4:13 thru 18
“.....and the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and all the dead-in-Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore, comfort one another with these words.” (Excerpt)
Another scripture says that when “the fig tree” buds, the generation on earth at that time will not pass away before the Lord comes back in the Rapture. The Fig Tree (The Nation of Israel) budded in 1948. I’m looking for the Lord’s return, not a rise in sea level.
...to Antarctica and with his detector discovered the ubiquitous presence of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), man-made gases now known to deplete the stratospheric ozone layer......and lucky for all of us and our newly-monitored ozone layer, those pesky CFCs were out of patent anyway, so the chlorine-containing replacement would be more expensive and line the pockets of the patent-holding corporation that made it. I'm sure there was no solid connection there, though... ;') Thanks Fred.

Maybe the envirowhackos will listen to HIM on the point that we need to switch from fossil fuel to nuclear power.
Thanks for the pings!
Interestingly, that's the exact charge we skeptics level at the true believers.
