House Passes Native Hawaiian Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Native Hawaiians should regain some of the self-governance powers lost when the islands' queen was overthrown more than a century ago, the House decided Wednesday.

The White House threatened a veto, saying the legislation that passed by a 261-153 vote would divide Americans "along suspect lines of race and ethnicity."

The bill would give the 400,000 people nationwide of Native Hawaiian ancestry the right to form a governing entity that could negotiate with the state and federal governments over such issues as control of natural resources, lands and assets. The interior secretary would have to approve that governing body.

Native Hawaiians, who long have sought the bill, insist they deserve many of the self-autonomy rights provided to American Indians and Native Alaskans.

The legislation is backed by Hawaii's Republican governor, Linda Lingle, its Legislature and the state's all-Democratic congressional delegation, including Native Hawaiian Sen. Daniel Akaka.

The Democrat Party of Secession, Slavery, Sedition and Sodomy is at it again. They also seem to be preoccupied by things that went one 100 years or more.

The interior secretary would have to approve that governing body. Well that will keep it tied up. They don't realize that they have been given nothing. It is like getting a very box wrapped in very pretty paper with ribbon and bow that contains only air.

The White House threatened a veto

Poor George. That's about all the clout he has left, now that he has the Congress he thought he wanted, a Congress he would work with.

[Those frequent threats of veto are getting old.]

1) This is about the "leadership" (a self-selected few) getting their greedy paws on government money. They know damn well that most Hawaiians are not mixed blood. 2) If Bush and the Repubs let this travesty pass, the US really is finished. Sharia will be asked for next, and there will be a precedent set.

Let’s just remove Hawaii as a U.S. state...retroactive to 1959. That way Barack Obama would have to withdraw from the Presidential race.

Michael Savage, who lived in Hawaii for years, has said “native Hawaiians” are the most racist people he has ever met.

Every threatened veto has been carried out and not overridden. President Bush doesn’t threaten. He promises.
The dirty little secret here is that if the Akaka Bill passes the House and the Senate, the consequences to the United States of America, because of all the legislation by other groups waiting in the wings for the Akaka Bill to pass, will be unimaginable.

And if amnesty passes the (former)illegals will be demanding the same thing.

If the Akaka Bill passes - and it still has to make it pass the Senate - President Bush will veto it. You know he will because he said so.
Fact is, there are already approximately 160 federal programs for Hawaiians already based on race only.
The Hawaiians were not overthrown by the US in spite of Clinton’s apology. The US, without firing a shot, by the presence of just over 100 armed Marines, upheld a duly established government.

That’s a strange thing to say. I don’t ever remember Pres. Bush saying he wanted a Democrat congress.

I've a BIL that lived on Maui for 14-15 years....he told me that he had many local friends...but when push came to shove his family and him were forever considered haole.

Whats nuts about that...is it had to do with the color of your skin mainly...He told me lots of brown skinned folks over there aren't Hawaiian...( Hispanic, Asian, etc..) but not treated like the whites.

I was married to a native Hawaiian for 30 + years. I found her and her extended family to be the most accepting people I have ever met.
