In 2003 an FBI memo alerted law enforcement agencies that an al-Qaeda terrorist being held in detention had talked of masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires around the western United States.
2003? That was the last time California experienced massive fires, also in October. Hmmm...

“So now someone associated with AQ goes from a terrorist to a mere associate...”
And while I’m bitching on that subject, the courts just annointed that very line of reasoning with their mis-trials yesteray. Idiots...the lot of them!

Thanks for the article.
Reminds me of Spain's arson fires.

The rains just killed the fires in Oregon a couple of weeks ago. During a TV interview an Oregon fire chief seemed a little too happy when he talked about heading to California. Also a lot of illegal aliens make good money on these fires.

“There was a case in Boston several years ago where firefighters were accused of arson, and I believe convicted. It was in the Readville section of town. I did a quick Google search without finding an affirmation of this item.”

Oh, I’m sure “some” wildfires have been set by firefighters. That’s a far cry from “a surprisingly large number” which is what the OP said.

Hypothetical situation:
Let's say you bought your house for $800,000 at the top of the market in 2004. It's now 2007 and it will sell for only $500,000 if offered. Your ARM is about to reset to a higher percentage rate. You can't make the mortgage payments at the higher rate. You owe more than the house is worth. You can't refi because refi's are harder to get and you no longer qualify. You can't sell because you would owe more than it would bring. However, your house is insured for fire damage for the full amount you bought it for -- $800,000. There are several fires in the surrounding area. What to do...?
Is it possible?

That's absurd. There are a lot easier ways to get out from underneath debt than torching a third of the state. Maybe they didn't torch a third of the state, but took advantage of the already widespread fire situation to add a small area to it that would include their unoccupied investment property that has been on the market for a while now and will not sell. There doesn't have to be a widespread conspiracy to think someone might take advantage of the chaos around them to improve their situation a little bit.

The detainee believed that significant damage to the U.S. economy would result and once it was realized that the fires were terrorist acts, U.S. citizens would put pressure on the U.S. government to change its policies, the memo said.Maybe, just maybe, they'd learn that sort of thing would piss the vast majority of Americans off, rather than surrendering like they did in Spain... The change in policy? Sure, take "The Surge" and triple it!
