Romney's rhetoric glosses Mass. years

On the presidential campaign trail, Mitt Romney points to healthcare reform as his major achievement as Massachusetts governor, presenting the plan as an example of how he used conservative principles to provide affordable health insurance for all state residents without a government takeover. But he does not mention aspects of the plan that may hold less appeal for his Republican audiences. For example, he decries "socialized medicine" and says the Massachusetts plan is "all a private initiative, a private-based, market-based healthcare" -- omitting the fact that the state and federal governments subsidize much of the overall cost and that a public board negotiated the benefits and prices that private insurers now offer.

He wows audiences by telling them that premiums for individuals dropped from $350 a month to $175 a month, without clarifying that those figures are for the lowest-cost plan available for 37-year-olds and without mentioning that for many people, especially the elderly, premiums can be several hundred dollars more.

And he sometimes downplays the role that Democrats on Beacon Hill had in putting together the final plan.

All of the GOP candidates are lying about their records. It’s just a question of which liar is best able to beat Hillary.

Romney is probably the only Republican running that has done something on health care reform. Health care costs have been rising considerably in excess of inflation and the middle class is being squeezed. If the Republicans don’t address this issue head on, the middle class may look to the democrats.

It’s just a question of which liar is best able to beat Hillary. That is how we got Bush, "the only one who could beat Gore" This time go for a true Conservative, win or loose.

I wish the MASS FReepers would speak up and let us know what they think about how Romney ran their state as governor. I'd like a real conservative's assessment from someone who either benefitted or suffered under his time in state office. I've done the same for the Huckster (Mike Huckabee) from our state many, many times. Any takers?

This was a compromise plan. Don’t forget, Romney had to get this plan passed by mostly leftist Democratic state legistlators so, all things considered, he did the best that he could.

It’s still a lot better than Hillary-care.

If you want a Big-Government moderate who supports the gay agenda then Romney's your man for sure.

Exactly.

But talking about that just kills the Mitt-bashing buzz so many on FR have going! The catchy name-calling and FUD are just so much more fun than objectivity and truth.

Romney understands about the words "compromise" and "progress". He compromised with a very liberal legislature to make progress in a more conservative direction. But to the 100%'ers, that's just not good enough. He's a bloomin' RINO because he wasn't able to single-handedly turn Massachusetts into a reliable conservative state in a few years.

But some of Romney's critics and political foes -- all strong supporters of the state's healthcare law -- say he is resorting to tricks used by candidates trying to put the best spin on their records: accentuating the positive, deleting difficult details, and taking too much credit.

And this is spin in the opposite direction: accentuating the negative, focusing on irrelevant details, and giving too little credit. If Mitt was able to work with a hostile legislature, more power to him.

Aw, come on, T. There is some truth to what the Globe reports because the Muttster is the one that having the problem with the correct facts about his record on just about everything. Listening to him now, you wouldn't believe that just a scant two years ago he was a pro-choice, gay-backing, sanctuary-excusing, tax-taking liberal who prided himself for being to the left of Ted Kennedy. Of course, now he's all for national defense (despite the fact that none of his five sons will choose to defend their country unlike the sons of both Duncan Hunter and John McCain). He's also suddenly anti-abortion, and anti-gay marriage (complete 180-degree turns)...sorry, but I smell something fishy on going with the Romulan and its begining to reek like a rotting dead mackerel in the sun!

Yup! You can always trust the Boston Globe for a fair and balanced report on a Republican. They’ve never attacked or smeared Romney before. /sarcasm
