U.S. sailor shoots two female colleagues on Bahrain base in 'love triangle' killings

Last updated at 17:04pm on 22nd October 2007

A U.S. Navy sailor allegedly shot and killed two female sailors early Monday on a U.S. military base in Bahrain, a Navy official said.

Initial reports suggest the shooting was the result of a "love triangle," according to a State Department official.

The alleged shooter, a male, was critically wounded in the incident in the barracks on the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base.

Fortress: The shootings took place at the U.S. naval base in Bahrain

The shootings took place around 2am, the Navy has said. Officials closed the base temporarily and reopened it about an hour after the incident.

The two women were pronounced dead at the scene, and the man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

No other details were immediately available, and the Navy said it was not releasing the names of those involved until their families were notified.

"The incident is under investigation, and it would not be prudent to discuss details at this time," said Navy spokesman Lt. John Gay.

Bahrain, a tiny island nation on the Persian Gulf, is a U.S. ally and home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which is responsible for an area of about 2.5 million square miles (6.5 million sq. kilometres) of water including the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean.

About 3,600 personnel work on the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base, located just outside Bahrain's capital, Manama. The base supports U.S. naval ships in the region.

Of immediate concern is to save this shooters life, get him well enough to stand trial and sentence him to death.

We need killers in the military, not murderers.

Do we know that he ws the aggressor -- or was he defending himself?

No, but it sure does not look good for him. It is hard to imagine a scenario where he would be attacked by two women that he was involved.

The sad thing is that these idiots probably will be buried in one of our nations veteran’s cemeteries.

>>>“... it adds fuel to the argument that women should not be deployed among men overseas or aboard ships.”

Uncle of mine was a navy officer who had a major role in putting the women aboard. He explained to me his job at the time was to fill the billets and they either put women to sea, or the ships couldn’t sail. There simply weren’t enough men enlisting. I don’t think that’s changed.

The funny part was years later he received an honorary doctorate from a university as a pioneer in woman’s right. Feminism had nothing to do with the decision, it was purely a practical personnel matter, but he took the degree anyway and said “thank you” ;)

Yes, by all means lets get those pesky women out of the military. After all, military men NEVER get violent over civilian women./s

*sigh*

A predictable and sad response.

Why not brush the chip off your shoulder and look at the veracity of what he actually wrote? The juvenile extreme sarcasm bit doesn't fly very far on FR.

Idoits? Please tell me you’re not calling murdered sailors idiots. We have no evidence yet of any wrongdoing whatsoever by the murdered sailors.

He turned the gun on himself, which would tend to make him the aggressor. And would imply to me that the women had something going on.

Yes, I can’t imagine what the two women would have against him. ;)

Yes, if this was a love triangle, I am.

My husband was buried in a National Veteran’s cemetery in July. Immediately in front of his grave and one over active duty young people, same story. Love triangle.

Why? Women have been known to be rather tough and aggressive, too, you know.

Nor do we know who murdered whom.

If you can find evidence that the two women ambushed the man using a gun knife or some other weapon you may be on to something. Otherwise, from what is reported here is appears that a double murder took place.

“So then what? Don’t assign them to ships and don’t allow them to be stationed overseas, why not just ban them entirely?”

I’ll go for that.

Exactly.

It's possible one of the deceased woman was the shooter...and turned the gun on herself.

He turned the gun on himself, which would tend to make him the aggressor.

Maybe he got to thinking it over and figured that (as is all too likely) a jury these days just might, like you, have him conviceted before he ever came to trial. So he chose not to spend the rest of his life in jail for having defended himself.
