BAGHDAD Multi-National Division Baghdad Soldiers uncovered a cache of improvised explosive device-making materials in Adl, a western neighborhood in the Iraqi capital, based on a tip given by an Iraqi citizen Oct. 20.
An Iraqi approached a joint Coalition Forces patrol comprised of Soldiers from Company A, 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment and Company 3, 3rd Battalion, 5th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army, and provided information about insurgents constructing IEDs out of a business in Adl.
The insurgents were reported to have plans to use the material in attacks against Coalition Forces on Oct. 30, the anniversary of Saddam's execution. A cordon and search was conducted, materials were confiscated and two suspects were taken into custody.

I don’t want to downplay the real violence that is still taking place in Iraq, but it does look as if this is winding down to a policing operation that could be handed over at some point.
Guys like this one on the street, notifying the local authorities will be the key. I’m very glad to see that the locals trust the troops enough to talk to them about the things they see.

BullShip !
They don't like us, they don't want us there, we can't win, the war is lost .... (have I forgotten anything?)
Do the socialists really think they will control the history books?

All along the average Iraqi has been hanging back, trying to be invisible. The “insurgents” are murderers and the Iraqis didn’t want to be at their mercy when the USA pulled out, as the Democrats and the media insisted we do. Now that it looks like we are going to see the mission through to the end they feel safer and are coming forward to help.

Yes, you’re right. Just the reality that the Democrats were calling for us to withdraw, was sapping support on the ground in Iraq. The surge was more symbolic than tangible in my opinion. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same results could have been achieved with ten thousand more troops, and the same message of determination to see this through until the end.
I am glad that it worked. And Bush deserves the credit for seeing it through.

Do you know the significance of Oct 30th as an anniversary date for the terrorist?

I just thought it was strange that the insurgents have materials for an attack to coincide with Saddam’s execution which they quote as Oct 30th.

Do you know the significance of Oct 30th as an anniversary date for the terrorist? I don't. There may be something, but those terrorists have so many dates, I can't keep track of them. I can ask our force protection guys about it tomorrow. They keep up with stuff like that.
October 30 is one of my sisters' birthday, though. ;-)

Im very glad to see that the locals trust the troops enough to talk to them about the things they see. This only happens this well when your soldiers are walking a beat, getting to know the locals.

We should use all of these caches to build a “border fence” between Iran and Iraq.
Use them all to make a great big trench along the border!

Good grief! Time is zipping by. The Butcher has been dead for a year already. Sort of silence on his favorite gas man's date with the hangmen. Perhaps the courts will stop his execution in further attempts at bringing in more Sunni into the fold.
Meanwhile, it appears that Iraqi people are not buying into UBL's lastest appeal to put the cause in front of nationalism and tribal affiliations. He must be delusional at this point, if he thinks he is going to convince millions of muslims that have lived in a twenty year horror story, and finally freed from a great deal of their misery, to throw their knives into the fire and go out and get killed.
One can only wonder what goes through the minds of potential jihadist kids outside of Iraq that hear his camel manure then see how the Iraqi people are turning on UBL's goon squads.
