The injustice of this case propelled Nazanin Afshin-Jam to take immediate action and start a petition to help save the life of her namesake. With many speeches and rallies worldwide and months on the media circuit, over 345,000 signatures were collected and delivered to the United Nations and Iranian Officials.
Following pressure from the International community, on June 1st 2006, the Head of Judiciary Ayatollah Shahroudi announced a stay of execution and the call for a complete new retrial.
During the new trial on January 10, 2007, the five judges presiding over the case found inconsistencies with the testimonies of the male witnesses and unanimously ruled out premeditated murder and determined that the act was a case of self-defense. As a result Nazanin Fatehi was exonerated from the charge of murder.

Praise God!
Finally something done right.
Is this the part where her family steps up and does an “honor killing?”
Honor killing is much more prevalent among the Sunni than the Shia. \
Oh, any word of good cheer from the Nat’l Org of Women?
Thanks. This is a bit old, however, as the link to the story says,...
“Please continue to spread the word about her case and the plight of other women in similar circumstances such as Delara Darabi, Kobra Rahmanpour, Ashraf Kalhori, Fatemeh Haghighat-Pajouh, Malak Ghorbani and continue to pressure the Iranian Government to give these women a fair trial.
Visit the What You Can Do section and write a letter to the Iranian Officials to end the execution of children and teenagers. Iran is signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Charter of the Rights of the Child, which forbid them to execute anyone under the age of 18; however they continue to do so. There are 23 other minors on death row at the moment in Iran. We must now get to the root of the problem and put pressure on the Iranian officials to change the laws once and for all. One recommended site started by Iranian womens rights activist is the campaign : One Million Signatures Demanding Changes to Discriminatory Laws” at http://www.we-change.org/spip.php?article19.
Thanks God, as with many of these postings I cringe before reading them.
Must have been NOW that called up the head-choppers and said that they were mad and would show them, just remember what they did to Clarence Thomas and Lawrence Summers. < / sarcasm>
A new kangaroo trial, and new execution order will happen as soon as she’s out of the limelight.
This may be the first time anything good has come out of the UN!
Is it not AMAZING how NOW and like-minded lefties just look the other way when it comes to Muslim treatment of the fairer sex?
Kinda reminds me of the way they responed to Bill Clinton’s sex with an intern: “sex was a private matter”. It wasn’t so private when a GOP Senator from Oregon was caught smooching his interns. Then the NOW threatened to follow Bob Packwood everywhere he went until he resigned. He did.
Just a little bit of a double standard here?

What wonderful news! I said a prayer for her earlier, as did many FReepers I’m sure. God has answered our prayers!
Hard to say. What is playing out here is tribalism that is older than Abraham.
She was not violated by the rapists so there is no stain on family honor in that sense to be avenged by a father or a brother. However, the blood money issue (in lieu of a life for a life) may subject the impoverished family to a lot of threats and pressure against her and other members of the family. An honor killing might be considered as a way to square the account. She may have to flee to save her life from her family and/or the family of the dead “man.”
Behind every double standard is an unconfessed single standard.
But I thought there are no gays in Iran? This is a phenomena that exists only in the USA. Maybe there are no gays in Iran because when they are discovered they are executed?
According to the article, she has already received her second trial and is now free. The “blood money” was paid by donations so there should (hopefully) be no retribution.
