UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.
A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

We can see the smoke of the Portero fire to our southwest. It seems to be a lot heavier now than earlier, even though we are probably 25 - 30 miles ne of it.
Our wind here can’t quite decide what direction it wants to come from now. Very erratic.
My brother lives in Spring Valley, SoCalPol. Is Spring Valley also affected?

Just turned on the live feed for a few minutes- heard a FF say that fire travels 16 times FASTER going uphill than it does on flat ground. Who knew?
I don’t think SV is directly affected.
I live in the City of San Diego near downtown and a long
ways from the areas involved.
Malibu city council guy on KFI now. They are closing the Zuma Beach shelter and moving everyone to the Agoura HS one instead. Presumably further away... is Zuma in the line of fire now? Zero% containment.
Prayers up, Mfccinsd.
We're getting smoke here, with skies to the West of me brownish-orange and looking North, it's just brown. Good news is that North-East skies are still blue.
Heat, hot gases and flames all rise, so it makes sense.
Great sat pic! Thank you Mfc : )
From the deck of the Queen Mary - looking across to the city of Long Beach - the coastline is barely visible because of the wind blowing the sand.
God help those folks whose homes are in danger.
KOGO radio is giving ongoing and first hand reports on the San Diego fires, one person who lost their home and while leaving in his RV was also on fire and pulled out of the RV
Hey johnny funny now
One Fire fighter Dead
Thanks, SoCalPol. Glad to hear you're not in the smokey areas.
My brother is in a sort of canyon-like area of Spring Valley with lots of trees and brush so hopefully there won't be a problem today.
another fire now in the Fontana area
For San Diego County fires:
The Witch Creek Fire is now on both sides of 78 at Old Julian Highway, burned more than 3000 acres. Several structures threatened and highway 78 has been crossed in several areas with 78 closed between Santa Ysabel and Ramona. Evacs to Poway High School OR Ramona Fairgrounds. If you need to evac animals, go to Poway High School (on Espola Road)
The Harris Fire is the deadly one. 1 civilian killed, 4 other civilians injured. 2 fire fighters in critical condition at UCSD, 2 other FFs injured. 2500 acres burned. Evacuations to Steele Canyon High School in Campo/Rancho SD area. This fire is in very rugged terrain.
Smoke all over the county and fire fighting resources are stretched thin, but in anticipation of the high threat b/c of Santa Ana winds this weekend, resources HAD been stepped up in advance of this.
They’re also saying that people are very nervous b/c it is 4 days away from the anniversary of the October wildfires, and that they want to calm people down that the fires are out east and that it’s the winds that are pushing the smoke west, and getting rid of the sunlight, and that people are thinking we’re having a situation similar to the Cedar fires and that is NOT the case.
Right now, in San Diego, it is ONLY the Santa Ysabel/Ramona areas and the Potrero areas that are threatened.
8 different fires in LA and San Diego area now
