UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Gee EATB, should you be high tailing it out of there FRiend? I mean these winds are wicked (as if you don’t already know). Stay safe and in touch. Communications are spotty at best out there.

BG, yeah are whole family is saddened and worried for everyone out there. They live quite the exiting life. While in the DC area presiding over two major hositals in the Bethesda and DC area, they endoured 2 weeks of being snowed in during the worse snow storms in decades, then dealt with 9/11 and all the burn victims from the Pentegon. (or was it the other way around) Moved to San Diego and experienced the brunt of the 2003 fires. Half of my brother in laws staff lost their homes and now this. I hope this is it for a while.

Thanks FRiends!

We have the volunteer departments because the county decided it didn’t want to be in the fire service business any more. After the Cedar/Paradise fires on ‘03, they suddenly got interested, but their proposal went overboard the other way, there wasn’t that kind of funding available, so they’ve done pretty much nothing. Mandating the districts hire full time personnel, letting THEM do the hiring, and funding the salaries would go a long way to solving the problems, but they refuse to consider that solution.

Luckily we went to a friend’s house. Yesterday morning they were telling us that we could go to Qualcom but all they had there were portapotties. No food, drinks, nothing! DH’s friend called while we were on the freeway headed to the stadium. They saved us big time!

As a 60 year native here, I don’t see some of the problems some think there are.

I tend to agree, considering the continued drought, devil winds, lack of humidity, and multiple fires burning...I see lack of resources a factor... A lot of this just goes with the territory, and increases in outlying area populations.

Many just don't realize how hard a wind driven fire can be to stop. Some areas so smoky, they can't even see where to make water drops.

Mandatory evacuation in Encinitas
Posted @ 1:36 PM
Encinitas city officials have ordered the mandatory evacuation of Olivenhain east of Rancho Santa Fe Road and north of El Camino Del Norte, although there are no fires inside the city.

No other evacuations are necessary at this time, city officials said.

Residents will be notified by telephone if the city feels they should leave their homes.

The Encinitas Senior and Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, is open as a shelter. It offers food, drinks and restroom facilities. Residents are advised to bring bedding.

Reverse 911 calls are made to Highland
The U.S. Forest Service has called for voluntary evacuations for the city of Highland due to increasing flames moving south of Running Springs.

A reverse 911 call was placed to all Highland residents advising there was pending danger from the Slide fire moving southwest from Highway 18 and Highway 330.

There is no immediate threat been high winds have been pushing the fire southwest of Running Springs through Fredalba and Smiley Park.

Evacuation centers have been established at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino and the Victorville Fairgrounds, 14800 7th Street in Victorville.
