UPDATE: The city of Malibu is advising residents in Puerco Canyon to begin evacuating due to a wildfire driven by powerful winds. This area is north of Pacific Coast Highway and about 1 mile west of Pepperdine University. Residents along the beach on Malibu Road may soon be evacuated. Pacific Coast Highway is closed between Kanan-Dume Road and Topanga Canyon. Residents are advised to head to the west. Evacuation centers are being set up in the Zuma Beach area.

A wildfire driven by powerful winds in the Malibu Hills this morning threatened a university, destroyed at least one home and forced the evacuation of hundreds more, authorities said.

Hi Earnest. So glad you put this thread together. It has been quite a time as my in-laws were right in the path of the fires yesterday. Turns out not only did they lose their home but my brother in law, CEO of Palomar Pomerado Hospital had to evacuate all of the patients as well. We can’t communicate with them for now except some hotel in downtown San Diego put them up along with their children and small dogs so he could coordinate the hospital evacuation last night. The lack of sleep must be incredible.

Anyway, they have resources but I know how hard this must be for them. They were weeks away from a total renovation of their home. Now everything is gone. Sad.

I think the stress on the kids is going to be the clincher.

What’s frustrating is the lack of telephone communications. We are leaving them alone until things get a little more under control.

How are you doing? Prayers and thanks again.

Gaining on Witch Fire

Tuesday, October 23, 2007
Posted @ 11:42 AM

RANCHO SANTA FE … Firefighters were cautious the deadly Witch Fire was slowing its menacing pace this morning, but remained on alert, dousing small smoldering fires and awaiting a return of the blowing Santa Ana winds.

“There are no structures in danger at the moment,” said Kevin Wegener, strike team leader of the Placer Co. Fire Department. “Yesterday was much worse. We couldn’t stay ahead of it. Today there’s not as much danger for the moment.”

Wegener, who arrived from his Central California base yesterday at 7 a.m. and had not slept since then, said his crews were now ahead of the blaze, dousing hot spots ignited by flying embers.

“A lot of what we are seeing now is interior burning in advance of the main fire,” said Wegener from the corner of Las Colinas and Via de la Valle at 11:15 a.m. “We are ahead of the main front, something we couldn’t do yesterday. It kept jumping ahead of us yesterday. It’s much better today.”

Interior burning describes small fire that leap ahead of the main fire line, igniting dry brush with embers carried along by the winds.

Earlier today, firefighters fought interior fires along El Mirador and Las Colinas, hoping to stay ahead of the blaze that torched 30 to 35 homes last night in this North County luxury community. Winds were relatively clam before noon.

A private citizen, recommended by a California Department of Food & Agriculture veterinarian, has volunteered enough property, staff, food, and water resources to care for up to 1,700 horses.

Wow!

I only vaguely remembered those articles. It doesn’t really matter because the ELF people are on the side of the Islamofascists, anyway. Terrorists are terrorists.

It’s not just the horses - it was seeing that scene that brought the overwhelming frustration of all these fires to the surface. There is so much loss, it is impossible to even fathom.

It reminded me of another day, six years ago. I could barely speak - and then I saw one little thing, and the tears started - and didn’t stop for a long time.

Prayers are continuing for all our FReepers who are near the fires or have family or friends that cannot be reached in California. Please don’t take any chances.........

Oatmeal Raisin would be good for the firemen....more sophisticated energy sources in there than just white flour.
