Md. governor won’t stop bear hunt
Cumberland Times-News ^ | October 19, 2007 | Michael A. Sawyers

As of right now, though, Gov. Martin O’Malley has told the animal righteous people — not in so many words, of course — to pound sand.

The animal righteous people, aka Humane Society of the United States, tried to pressure the governor into stopping the bear hunt that kicks off tomorrow in Garrett and Allegany counties.

The Humane Society of the United States has pretty deep pockets, so the full-page ad it placed in The (Baltimore) Sun Monday was no big deal, fiscally speaking.

The animal righteous people (ARP) ... think it makes a hunter look bad if he is described as a trophy hunter, though any trophy hunters I know use the hides and the flesh of their animals to full avail.

ARP doesn’t like any hunting. It’s just that bears are easy to think of in an anthropomorphic sense. They want you to envision little cubbypoos as if they are precious human babies.

News flash. They ain’t.

So, thank you Governor O’Malley for being a stand-up guy, for not dealing with the bear hunt in a political way, but in a scientific way. You have some pretty sharp dudes in your wildlife management agency and a good boss always lets his sharp dudes do what they were hired to do.

The folks up here have bears in their backyards. Bears that walk around their children’s swing set, past the front porch and ...

These are people who have already had to change their daily lives because of 200- to 400-pound omnivores.

We don’t let our kids or grandkids eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich outside.

If we chain a dog to a tree we have to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t turn into bear scat.

My sentiments too. The local news has really been playing against the hunt with the cruelty to animal spin. They often fail to mention the danger (if not cruelty) of letting local bears starve as they crowd eachother and compete for limited resources.

Maybe we’ll get lucky and a few of those suffering from Bambi-itis will act as human shields for the bears.

in the 1980s the bear status was changed to game species, based upon rapidly expanding number of bears.

What we find amazing is that 'Animal Rights' people actually think they are doing the animals a favor by stopping hunting.

What they fail to understand is that hunting keeps the animal population healthy by keeping the numbers down.

Oh, can you just see it?!

Bear human shield: “Shoot it! Shoot it before the bear kills me!”

Hunter: “Be careful what you ask for, Dude...”

Starvation, cannibalism and death by auto are much more humane ways for the bears to die?

I just saw a hunting show earlier this week and they were commenting on a bear hunt being stopped in the north country. I had no idea bears resorted to cannibalizing their young when hungry.

Ok...let’s not get carried away with O’Malley being a stand up guy. He’s not. In this one instance he made the right decision but its more likely due to revenue than principle. O’Malley is a liberal in the truest sense of the word. He screwed up Baltimore even worse than it was as Mayor, and is now looking to rape Marylanders of every dollar he can in increased taxes. He’s working with Hillary to create a Maryland health care fiasco as a model for her Hillarycare later on. He’s making Maryland a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. The guy is a total low-life.

A bear killing a person?

Why, that wouldn’t be very “humane” of the bear!! (sarcasm)

Male bears also kill many cubs ....

Fights between bears over territory are common and deadly too.

Yes I do. I also remember the one that tried to break into a friends house and the one that stole a 60 pound pig from its pen after destroying the guys car because he had an empty donut box in it and the ones that consistently every fall destroy our bird feeders and break off tree limbs to get suet cakes.

You should never leave children unattended and never let them play far from the house. Always have a dog nearby that will give tongue when they smell one in the area.

LOL! That is the sad and depressing truth. As a Republican living in socialist Maryland who works directly in the federal and state healthcare policy environments and pays her Maryland taxes, I agree with your comments. Still, happy he is okay with the bear hunt.

They aren't alone. People under seige can get ugly:

Leviticus 26:29 And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.

Deuteronomy 28:53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, [9] the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the Lord thy God hath given thee, in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee:

Liberals in the cities have no clue.

We can no longer open our windows in the summer for a little breeze for fear a bear will invade. Only in the last five years as they banned the spring bear hunting season here.

Then some DOW person will blame us for living.

grrr
