Phoenix A mother and daughter, both wanted in Florida on charges of racketeering, were apprehended by alert U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Wednesday night.
While screening passengers arriving from Mexico City, CBP officers examined documents belonging to 24-year-old Silvana Theurell-Portillo. While asking routine questions of Theurell-Portillo, the officers queried her name in their systems and discovered that she was a fugitive, wanted in St. Lucie County, Fla. on gambling and racketeering charges.
During questioning of her mother, 65-year-old Marina Portillo, CBP officers discovered that she also was wanted on similar charges in Florida.
In addition to our primary mission of anti-terrorism, protecting the nation from other threats, such as individuals attempting to flee from justice, is an important aspect of the CBP officers duties, said Port Director Don Anderson, Our officers do a fantastic job protecting the nation by arresting these fugitives from justice and taking them off the streets.
Both women, Mexican citizens living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, were taken into custody by CBP officers and held until officers with the Phoenix Police Department arrived to take custody of them.
These apprehensions are a direct result of name queries performed during primary inspections, as well as CBP officers ability to follow through and investigate suspicions raised during questioning and inspections.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of the nations borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
Ping!
Two down, 29999998 to go!
Kudos to the agents involved.
Yeah, just a couple of more “Mexican nationals” that are probably on the phone with the ACLU as we type.
Good news. Now for the other 20 million.
Just two more hard-working “immigrant citizens” trying to make a better life their family.
Yes, they were just doing the gambling and racketeering ordinary Americans refuse to do.
Make them paint over Graphiti untill they pay back all the money they stole...then deport them.
Thanks for the ping.
Isn’t it interesting that most of the comments so far have assumed they were illegal aliens? I see nothing here that would tell me they were illegal, just ignorant of our processes.
Did they really think CBP would just wave them through?
Brings to mind the phrase “Like Mother, like Daughter”
They were “Mexican citizens living in Argentina”. They both had outstanding warrants from Florida. What information implies they were legal American citizens?
I didn't say they were legal American citizens. I am rejecting the assumption by several here that they were illegal aliens.
Just two more hard-working immigrant citizens trying to make a better life their family.
tut tut .............tt
an also ahem....aint that ‘guest workers’
im telln ya the way these Customs and Border Bulldogs treat our guests ....well....... all i can say is
ayeeeeee caramba...
i’ll hold judgement until i see a pic of the daughter.
Ugly, both mother and daughter!
Fact is, they were never illegally here!.
Lately folks aren't letting facts get in the way of their pet issues. That's why I don't spend much time on the main board these days.
Same here! I posted this because I was involved. It was a pretty cool evening, and on the positive side, when we turned them over to Phoenix PD, they lived through the night!
