SACRAMENTO - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to veto a same-sex marriage bill for the second time in three years gathered lots of publicity.
But at the same time he rejected same-sex marriage, Schwarzenegger quietly signed seven of the eight bills sponsored by Equality California, a leading gay rights organization. His record further enhances his reputation as a supporter of most gay rights.
Equality California, while disappointed at Schwarzenegger's rejection of their top priority, called 2007 the most successful year in its history.
The legislation signed by Schwarzenegger dealt with a variety of issues, including schools, taxes, civil rights and even family names. One bill allows registered domestic partners to choose a family name when they register with the state.
Social conservatives, however, were outraged and disappointed. They contend that the legislation signed by Schwarzenegger isn't about civil rights, but that it actually promotes what they call the gay lifestyle.
One group, the Capitol Resource Institute, has taken steps to put Senate Bill 777 before voters.
This is a great prequel to what a Rudy Administration would look like, Ahhnold is merely beating Rudy to punch.
Would it be better if Gray Out Davis had signed these bills into law?
I say “yes” it would be, now the Republicans in CA have no place to go, their “own” guy signed these things in his last term, he didn’t have to sign them, he chose to, and that is that as far as I am concerned with Ahnold.
I imagine he vetoed it by prior agreement with the homosexual lobby. “Give me eight bills, and I’ll sign seven of them. So we’ll both come out looking good.” Or words to that effect.

There used to be a poster here named 'FairOpinion' (now gone) who was a relentless, if artless, defender of Schwarzenegger. FairOpinion's primary "go to" argument in defending Schwarzenegger was to post a Democrat wish list of whacky legislation and then breathlessly claim that Gray Davis or Cruz Bustamante would sign all this crazy stuff into law, so thank goodness Arnold was elected!
And now look - - Arnold is signing ("quietly signing", lol) all that crazy Democrat stuff into law.
Congratulations, California.
