Like I saiud, I refuse to become a pawn of the format war. It is not going to last forever, they NEVER have and one of the formats WILL LOSE, leaving multitudes of people with obsolete product. No the OPPO 981 is not true HD, but it is close and for now, anyone buying into the HD format war is wasting their money. As it is HDDVD already proved it is incapable of delivering everything TRUE HD audio and video has to offer. The latest TRANSFORMERS HDDVD is proof of that. The audio is limited because the format does not have enough space to put true HD audio on the disk. No thanks, I and multitudes of others will wait for the war to end before sinking hard earned money into next gen DVD.

Obsolete product? Each format will play HD movies on your tv for many, many, many years into the future.
By most everyone’s account the Audio on Transformers is FREAKIN’ AMAZING, since it’s not in a “lossless” format (which means nothing to 90% of the folks here on FR - AND many sound mixers can’t tell the difference between DD+ and lossless)it’s not good right? Ridiculous, what about a lossless audio title that doesn’t sound great, or isn’t an action movie with explosions, etc. Not every title is an audio feast. Does the audio on Transformsers sound like crap? How do rate it 1-10, have you listened to it? Most everyone rated it 8-10, even blu-ray lovers, so how is it “incomplete”, it isn’t. I guess if it was in true hd it would have given it’s owners a back rub? The audio is likely better than 99.9 of the standard dvd’s you’re watching now on your oppo.
For 200 dollars you can have a HD-DVD player and 7 free movies, what are you going to “lose” if HD-DVD goes under 2 years from now?? You still have the player, 7 movies, hundreds of others to buy and rent.
For 400 dollars you can have a ps3 and 5 free movies and it plays games and other things, you don’t “lose” anything here either.
Meanwhile you’re not watching ANYTHING in HD or listetning to ANYTHING in HD audio!!!! Don’t deny yourself and others the HD experience.
By the way, they can buy either player THAT UPCONVERT JUST AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN YOU’RE OPPO!! you’re recommending. The only person recommending an outdated, obsolete product is.....YOU!!!
You’re telling them, no get an upconverting dvd player, it’s almost as good as 1080i, NOT EVEN CLOSE, the best upconverted discs look good but it’s only a few and still not even close.
You’re OPPO is obsolete, thousands of guys have moved them to their bedrooms and given them to their kids because their blu-ray or HD-DVD player upconverts regular dvd’s better.
