WASHINGTON Remarks by Rep. Pete Stark suggesting that U.S. troops in Iraq are getting their heads "blown off for the president's amusement" will forever live in posterity after Republicans tried and failed to censure the California Democrat during floor debate Thursday.
The assault came during House debate on a vote to override President Bush's veto of the State Children's Health Insurance Program bill, which went down to defeat, 273-156, 14 votes shy of the number necessary.
The action briefly came to a halt when Republicans asked that remarks by Stark be "taken down," or removed from the record. However, the objection came too late and was made on less inflammatory remarks, and were therefore ruled within the boundaries of House decorum.
But House rules prohibiting personal attacks on fellow lawmakers or the president didn't stop Stark from lambasting Bush for his veto, and repeating his charge that the president would rather use government revenues to send U.S. children to war than to pay for low-income kids' health care.
A longtime war critic, Stark said the president couldn't find $35 billion to expand SCHIP but at the same time had requested an extra $200 billion to pay for military operations in Iraq.
"Where are you going to get that money? Are you going to tell us lies like you're telling us today? Is that how you're going to fund the war? You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old, enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement," Stark said.

for the amusement of the President????
That statement is truly disgusting. How can he get away with saying that?
He is an insult to the office he holds and an embarrassment to this country.
‘Anyone have PETE STARKs CONTACT INFO?’
Nope. Not my rep.
I’m the last person you should ask basic math questions of....
Pete Stark
Fortney Hillman Stark, Jr. born November 11, 1931, usually known as Pete Stark...
'Fortney Hillman'?
Fortney?!?!? ....
Not mine either but he will hear from me.
A staffer will, but I doubt they forward the protests to him.
Good luck.
Even though they got “only 63%” that’s still disgraceful. Where in the Constitution is Congress given the power to spend taxpayers’ money on health care for anyone, let alone health care for children whose parents can afford it on their own? They are obviously doing this in an attempt to buy votes at the next election at the taxpayers’ expense. And too many Republicans are willing to go along with the ‘Rats in their socialist schemes.
Yep. Here's 'Fortney's' contact info. (his real name)

Shit is as shit smells.
‘Rat hate alert ping!
The sheeple are Dems, Stark has a “D” next to his name and thus baa baa baa off to the polls the Dems go vote.
The fact that Stark keeps getting elected is proof that Democrats are either stupid, don’t think or just plain too lazy to care about anything more than buying lottery tickets, beer and smokes and just prefer to be led.
Wolves like Stark are more than happy to gather up the sheep.

Just called and, as a veteran, expressed my outrage that any President would be accused of that. I despise Bill Clinton with every part of my being but even I would accuse him of find joy in any serviceman’s death.
And Stark is supposedly an Air Force veteran.
All the Demo-crap Presidential candidates should be asked if they agree with Cong Stark.
The libs have lost their f-ing mind.
Stark is pathetic. As well as the voters who vote for him again!
Just because you have an R after your name, it doesn’t make you a conservative.
Take the nut Ron Paul for example. How about McCain.
Each day the 'Rats in Congress surpass their previous lows for vicious, hateful, demeaning remarks. It was only yesterday that Pelosi blamed "hate radio" (meaning talk show hosts like Limbaugh, Hannity, and Levin) for the failure to override the president's veto of her SCHIP expansion.
The fact these dishonest people get elected says a lot more about all Democrats than about any Republican.
“But House rules prohibiting personal attacks on fellow lawmakers or the president didn’t stop Stark...”
So, as we’ve suspected all along, Democrats don’t care a fig for rules...
And they have never changed. If the rules favor them, the rules are fine. But if someone starts beating them by their own rules, they get mad and throw a tantrum and want to change the rules. Look in the dictionary for “Poor Sports on Steroids” and you’ll see a cross reference to “See Democrats.”
Hey, Stark. You should really try reading the Constitution sometime. Since you swore to uphold it and all, it would be useful to have an inkling of what's in it.
Here's a free clue: The president must defend the nation, but there's nothing in there about fleecing taxpayers for your kids' doctor bills.
Rush just played this tirade on his show. Stark’s remarks are despicable. He is disgusting.
He said, as he frothing at the mouth, that President Bush didn’t have the money for this health care OR to finance this “illegal war”, but that he would still wait until these poor children were old enough to send over to Iraq and get their heads blown off for his amusement.
Clearly, he has lost all his marbles. And pretty stupid, as President Bush won’t be sending ANY of these “children” over to Iraq as HE WON’T EVEN BE IN OFFICE anymore. What a dope.
