School Board Approves Birth Control Prescriptions at Maine Middle School

PORTLAND, Maine — Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.

The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

There are no national figures on how many middle schools, where most students range in age from 11 to 13, provide such services.

"It's very rare that middle schools do this," said Divya Mohan, a spokeswoman for the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care.

The Portland School Committee voted 5-2 for the measure.

Chairman John Coynie voted against it, saying he felt providing the birth control was a parental responsibility. The other no vote came from Ben Meiklejohn, who said the consent form does not clearly define the services being offered.

Opponents cited religious and health objections.

Diane Miller said she felt the plan was against religion and against God. Another opponent, Peter Allen, said he felt it violated the rights of parents and puts students at risk of cancer because of hormones in the pill.

A supporter, Richard Verrier, said it's not enough to depend on parents to protect their children because there may be students who can't discuss things with their parents.

Condoms have been available since 2002 to King students who have parental permission to be treated at its student health center.

Are they going to offer vasectomies to middle school age boys? If not, I call foul.

Aside from the anti-family, usurpation of parental rights ramifications - I believe there are medical studies that show giving these drugs to immature girls can cause some real damage...

Not to mention that these drugs aren't safe to take too many years - which means by the time they reach their mid 20's on, they could be in more danger - just when they would ordinarily be married and wanting to control their family size and/or number of children.

Insanity on all levels.

Sorry, I should clarify my last:

A parent that doesn’t RIP their student out of that school lends their tacit approval to the policy.

This doesn't make sense to me. I heard on GB show that you have to be 14 yrs old to have sex. So if a middle school is giving out birth control isn' that aiding & abetting? I looked up the consent age in Maine & it says age 16. I found this also:

Charles Walton of the Lewiston, Maine Police Department. According to him, as long as there isn’t more than 3 years difference between the two of you, and your boyfriend isn’t in any position of authority over you, for example: your coach, baby-sitter, teacher etc., there is nothing that your parents can do. Once you turn 16, as long as the person isn’t five years older than you, then no one can press charges.

I can understand that children are having sex earlier & earlier but I don't understand why they would give the pill out. The pill is not going to protect you from catching aids & stds. Plus if you smoke it can be dangerous. How is it legal for the school to give a child a form of birth control? This is becoming insane. If they start this bs here I am certainly going to raise he!!. I would think they would want to tell children NOT to have sex, not give them the tools to have sex.

Between this, the Gardasil vaccine and the new pill which eliminates periods all together the coming years will be a healthcare disaster, all planned I’m afraid.

How parents can so easily turn their children’s welfare over to the state. Doesn’t this bring back memories of Germany? But then again, that is history and that is something that doesn’t get taught in schools anymore.

I don't know. What happened to practicing medicine without a license? Will they be able to sue the school/government when someone is injured or killed which does happen with pharmaceutical medicines? I suppose not since it's the government.

There's the bottom line for Universal Health Care too. It will solve medical litigation because you can't sue city hall or Uncle Sam. It will free doctors and hospitals up to maim and kill at will.

Imagine, some 11 to 13 year old kids couldn't talk to their parents about this, without them going postal.  Point me to a set of parents that would accept their eleven to thirteen year old child having casual sex, and I'll point you to parents that should have that child taken away for their own protection.

Richard Verrier is a real brain trust.  Ask him what he does for a living and I'll bet he tells you he flips burgers at the local hot dog stand.

I'm wondering which 11 year old he has hooked up with?

Just another step for the state controlling
your kids.

These children could’nt take an aspirin without
consent but the state will allow your 11yr old
daughter to be encouraged into intercourse
with that mature 12 yr old boy.
The parents who allowed this are slobs.
The board must that encourages this be composed of budding child molesters.
molesters.

Let me tell you something. If the school finds out about your daughter having sexual relations, they will not tell you. How’s that for audacity?
