ROBIN HOOD'S PRISON? SHERIFF'S DUNGEON FOUND AT NOTTINGHAM GAOL

New evidence has been discovered that the medieval caves under Nottingham’s Galleries of Justice museum were once used by the Sheriff of Nottingham as a prison.

The dark dungeon cells would have been in use when the Sheriff resided at the Shire Hall and County Gaol.

“It is an exciting discovery,” said Tim Desmond, Chief Executive at the Galleries. “The cave has always been known as the ‘Sheriff’s Dungeon’, but until now we have only been aware of its later use as a chapel for the Georgian prison.”

He pointed out that not much thought had ever been given to its previous use as a cell for the Sheriff’s Hall that was originally on the site, until research into a new exhibition on the Sheriff of Nottingham. Staff then uncovered evidence that the Sheriff did indeed imprison felons in the lower level caves under the building.

“So far we have discovered an ancient staircase that led down to the cells and we are also excavating an area next to the cave,” said Tim.

There is, of course, the tantalising possibility that the cave prison had a very famous resident, and there are plans to allow the public to have a look for themselves.

“This is the first time visitors to the Galleries of Justice will be able to see the dungeon where Robin Hood would have been imprisoned in medieval times and already we have received a lot of interest from the public, from as far away as Japan,” said Tim

lived to play “pickle-me-tickle-me” with the Maid Marian

In that case she wouldn't have been known as 'Maid' Marian.

As far as Robin Hood goes, it’s not really that surprising. It’s a history thing: People used to wear them quite a bit, before central heating.

I thought they were more likely to wear leggings or “trews.”

Weren’t tights more often worn at “Court?”

...with Richard Greene playing Robin...

And the role of Little John was played by A. Nameless Gerbil

Robin Hood was my favorite show back when I was about eight years old. Richard Greene was so handsome (sigh), and he looked a bit like my Daddy (smile) that I do believe Robin Hood was my first girlhood crush.

You mention Sky King - another Saturday morning staple along with My Friend Flicka. They don't make shows like that anymore.

Errol Flynn is so gay in this rendition of Robin Hood. He had to have a company of queers dressing him.

Everybody knows the Sheriff never captured Robin.
Au contraire, not according to the B&W TV series from approx. 1955-1960 (with Richard Greene playing Robin).

And, Robin was captured after the archery competition in the Errol Flynn movie

Errol Flynn...don't get me started on the attractions of that bad boy. Be still, my heart!

His version of Robin Hood was a staple of 50's afternoon TV, along with "They Died With Their Boots On". I remember it well.

Oh come on, the Sheriff or his men would occasionally grab him, but imprison him in the dungeon? You’d have to cite the episode for me to believe it.

Not even Richard Greene was that inept a Robin as I recall.

We’re talkin’ ROBIN HOOD here, a guy who could shoot arrows into the end of other guys arrows in the bulls-eye, not some wimpy hero who’d just shoot guns out of the bad guy’s hands.

RH could definitely shoot more accurately than those wimps on myth busters. those guys can’t get even one arrow to split the enemy’s hole.

We’re men..manly men
We’re men in tights, yes (with lisp)
We roam around the forest looking for fights.
We’re men, we’re men in tights
We rob from the rich and give to the poor that’s right.

We may look like pansies,
but don’t get us wrong or else we’ll put out your lights. (bang)

We’re men... we’re men in tights (tight tights)
Always on guard defending the peoples rights
When your in a fix just call for the men in tights.

We’re butch.

Mel Brooks was really funny as the traveling rabbi - Rabbi Tuchman I think it was, in lieu of Friar Tuck. Performing circumcisions on all the bad guys.
