Monday, October 15, 2007 -- Parents with special needs children called KUSI's Michael Turko about a tiny local school that's about to go under. The school is trying to help local school districts, but Turko says it's going broke because those districts haven't paid their bills for months.

Looks like they’ll only show their video to folks who run Windows Media 11. So if they don’t want me to view it, I won’t.

Oh, and the school that is being abused by the school districts is The Pioneer Day School

"And that ain't right!"

Turko left Nashville nearly ten years ago yet his trademark tagline still resonates. There's always room for a reporter actually trying to right wrongs - no matter their motivation.

The Turko Files - Wednesday, October 17, 2007

This Mornings report is that the all four districts have paid up!

Turko has an "Email this story" button which allowed me to fire it off to two of the four districts and the County board of education. It is interesting to me that only half of these districts has easy email communication to the board members. Kudos to the Coronado Unified School District, the Carlsbad Unified School District and the San Diegon County Office of Education. This mornings email contained a response from only the Coronado Unified School District. Double Kudos for being Responsive. (yes I emailed them an attaboy!)

This is one instance of local press working correctly. Sort of a correct application of shame.

Do they have a contractual relationship with the districts? I Didn’t see anything of that nature on their web site.

I didn't see it on their website either. Turko reported it.

The Pioneer school persued the state accreditation so that it could offer it's services to the districts. It had also done some improvements to get the accreditation. The initial report had the School administrator with three months of bills that had not been paid.

I was thinking about the Accounts receivable procedures that might improve payment, like offering discount 2% when paid in 20 days. Or, Adding a ding for bills over 30 days. The Administrator stipulated that the School is a Non Profit corporation and they could be a better model for the School Districts, than say the for profit Special Education Schools.

Yes, I see language about ‘trying to help’ and ‘offer its service’ I don’t see anything about them contracting to take autistic children from the districts.

As for it being a better model, I’d suggest not, if they have difficulty keeping the doors open.

They really should find a better story to put on their web site than the one about the boy who made no progress with them before regressing. Not a very good sales pitch. http://www.pioneerlearningcenter.com/Donations.asp
