NASHVILLE, Tenn. Members of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church are urging Fred Thompson to support their stance on homosexuality _ a position on which they say the Republican presidential candidate once "saw eye to eye" with them.
Thompson was hired for a mid-1980s legal case in Kansas on the recommendation of Margie Phelps, daughter of Westboro founder Fred Phelps.
The Topeka, Kan.-based church is now best known for protesting at soldiers' funerals, claiming their deaths are retribution for the nation's acceptance of homosexuality.
Thompson campaign spokeswoman Karen Hanretty on Wednesday dismissed the church as "a radical fringe group, looking to draw attention to themselves."
"Their behavior at the funerals of fallen soldiers is disgraceful and reprehensible," she said. "In no way do these people share Fred's values."
Church members released an open letter to Thompson this week, saying he had discussed his views on homosexuality with them while handling the case of a woman who had sued the state's Republican attorney general for sexual harassment.
"We know what your position used to be on the homosexual question _ and it was wonderful, and we saw eye to eye," church members said in the letter to Thompson.
That statement appears to conflict with comments made by Margie Phelps to the Journal-World of Lawrence, Kan., in June about her interaction with Thompson.

Such a hard decision.
Not!
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
My guess is that they are out to sabotage Fred. Of course the MSM will happily comply since he is in the GOP.
I can see AP running this kind of garbage, but Fox?
This is kind of like Greenpeace going after Apple over the iPhone. If anything makes news, the next thing that happens is the idiots come out of the woodwork to start working angles and get themselves in the news.
Phelps knows that Fred Thompson is news, these days, and is looking to grab some of that publicity for himself. Add “slimy freeloader” to Phelps’ list of undesirable attributes.
It’s one thing for Fred to have said “well, no, I don’t think homosexuality is right either” which, if there’s ANY truth to this article, is probably what he said...it’s another thing to say “Kill Fags” and “God Kills Fag Soldiers” and the other crap that the Phelps clan says...I don’t buy for one minute that Fred would say those things.
Some on this site have argued that the Westboro gang are not a liberal group trying to torpedo Christians and conservatives.
I would say this puts a nail in the coffin of that argument.
They publicize that they had contact with Thompson in the mid 80’s now that he is running for office, but they don’t say a word about Gore during the 2000 campaign or now that he has won a Nobel.
I think Campaign Carl Cameron has been anti-Fred from the gitgo.
These freaks are worse than the Jim Jones tribe.
This is such an obvious attempt to slander him by association. I think homosexuality is as wrong as anybody does, but I am disgusted by those A$$ clowns that protest at funerals and make every national issue about sodomy. Phelps is a nut. I don’t know a single person who agrees with the tactics and rhetoric of Phelps and his goons. They truly must be miserable people. Hate the sin, love the sinner. That expression never gets old to me.
That's my guess too. This is similar to the Log Cabin Republicans running the Romney ads to hurt Romney and actually help Giuliani.
Yup. Yet I doubt he even talked about poofers with these clowns.
I saw that. I think the Loggers are mad at Mitt.
You know it. And they're doing Rudy's bidding.
I think they also like Ron Paul.
If these people were really against gays, then why weren’t they out protesting at the Folsum Street Fair in San Fran? (You know the one sponsored by Miller.)
And Gore actually HAD contact with them.
Because their real agenda is to undermine conservatives, nothing more, nothing less.
