I am thinking of making a website and I am beginning to look about for hosting options. But, I am going to ask my FRiends for a little help first.
I have received a LOT of computer help from this board and hope for some more.
As to content: I am thinking a few text pages and photos and possibly some sound files.
I know there are "free" hosts out there, but I am leery. If I do have to pay to get an ad free and spyware free site, I need it to be as economical as possible.

If you want to go on the cheap to start, you can get your own domain name for $20/year at netzero.com.
Most ISP’s will allow you to have a small, 10 megs or so, of personal webspace. Netzero will allow you to point to your personal web space when someone types in your domain name, so they won’t even know it is a free personal space from your ISP. If 10 megs isn’t enough, most ISP’s allow you to have multiple accounts for the same fee, so you can host part of your webspace on each of the account’s free space.

I use namecheap.com to register sites.
$8 a year.
I had Sprint which morphed into embarq. I do not see where they are offering any free space at all.
I bought my own domain name, and my personal web space was not enough, so I have an account with Earthlink for web hosting. With, DSL and my AV, I am paying over $65 a month which is a lot. I don’t have cable tv or a cell phone, so that’s how I rationalize the expense. I know I could find a cheaper way of doing it, but this is so reliable, and I can put pretty much out there I want. Actually, now they have given me way more space than I am currently using, and I have never exceeded my bandwidth.

I know how hard it is finding a good web host. It took me much looking but about 2 years ago I settled on 2.
Both have given me outstanding service.
realwebhost.com has my website. It is a local server in Texas in my area, smaller in users but very professional and very few problems.
I have a duplicate backup site with bluehost.com they are substantially bigger, cheaper and provide more bandwidth/space. Also very reliable. In Utah I believe.
Also dnsmadeeasy.com is not a webhost but a great service that allows you to manage your DNS and actually automatically switch between hosts if necessary.

Also check out 1and1.com (one and one). They are under $5 per month and provide more services than most hosts. They also allow sub-domains for free. You can use those to move yourself up the list on the search engine.
Yahoo does a good job of hosting websites.

I’ve been in business 10 years now and have a perfect BBB rating.
It's been 6 years - no complaints these days, although earlier on, there was a rash of mystery e-mail troubles. Wouldn't accept passwords for logging in.
That hasn't happened for 3 years now. They have "whitelisting", a scheme for reducing spam. I get only 3-5 spam letters a WEEK, and my e-mail is publicly available.
I usually shy away from .CON domains...

Go to Homestead.com — I have had several Domains there for avout 8 years — they are good.
