SOLANA BEACH Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other elected officials yesterday broke ground on a $168 million project to extend the car pool lanes on Interstates 5 and 805.
With a congested I-5 as a backdrop, the governor said it would be the first construction job funded in California with money from Proposition 1B, the transportation bond measure approved by state voters last year.
Schwarzenegger said the lanes mark the start of a new wave of transportation improvements, saying it's time to bulldoze our state out of gridlock.
The San Diego Association of Governments, working with Caltrans, wants to add eight miles of car pool lanes on I-5 and I-805 within five years. Local sales tax revenue will also be used to fund the projects.
On I-5, Caltrans plans to build the lanes from Del Mar to Encinitas by 2010. The agency is also making interchange improvements.
On I-805, the lanes will run from near Mira Mesa Boulevard to south of the I-5 split. Construction is expected to be completed by 2012.
Joining the governor at yesterday's announcement were Caltrans Director Will Kempton and several local and state elected officials, including San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders.
Sanders said the lanes will ease traffic in the Golden Triangle area and around the University of California San Diego. The city is spending $12 million on roadway improvements next to I-805.
The 2006 bond measure will fund $20 billion in transportation improvements statewide, including expanding the public transit system. Bond funds will also be used to expand the FasTrak lanes on I-15 and add lanes on I-805 in Chula Vista.
No ill will towards those who live in the Interstates 5 and 805 area and Solana Beach and can only wait for the completion of the projects with baited breath.
We in the South Bay feeeeel yur pain. -)
This isn’t goping to do a damn thing for congestion if they are going to paint diamonds on those lanes and restrict them to 2% of the drivers.
Just build the damn lanes and let everyone use them dammit.
Maybe they should just build a bicycle lane...
We are not going to bulldoze our way out of anything with more carpool lanes. They are causing gridlock not helping it. It is amazing how blind liberals can be about anything that is their idea. If it doesn’t work, ignore it and claim it does and keep pushing the idea. What a bunch of losers and what loser Arrrrnold turned out to be. He sure talked tough his firts few months in office and then his true colors bled through.
I can’t RECALL how we got stuck with Rinold, maybe some one else can RECALL him.....
Ah, yes! But how long do you think it will be before they also start charging a toll for using them? Revenue, revenue, revenue! (That's my prediction, anyway.)
