FRs own Jim Macomber has released his third John Cann novel entitled, A Grave Breach. I have reviewed his other two novels in this series, Bargained for Exchange as well as, Art and Part here on FR too.
Jim asked me if I would be willing to read an advance copy of this book and review it. Based on my very positive feelings about the other two novels, I enthusiastically agreed.
I was not disappoined.
Jim has a masterful ability to blend both legal thrillers with espionage and special forces action, both of which the main character happens to excel in, as well, if not better, in my opinion than either Grisham or Clancy. Like the best of those two combined.
In this novel we not only have those two facets of the story, but he adds in a health care thriller angle that lends additional intrigue and detail to an already exceptional storyline.
John Cann is again the main character in this story, as a former special forces shooter and a brilliant legal mind working for the firm, Loring, Matsen, and Gould, which also contracts for the CIA and other US government agencies and interests. Although John is the main character, in a very masterful way, Macomber actually works Johns boss and long time mentor, Arthur Matsen, a distinguished and highly respected older gentleman and lawyer, and a fomrer OSS agent from World War II into the story as the true centerpiece of the plot.
John is called off to Europe to become involved with legal issues and the associated intelligence agency operations involved in the ongoing hearings and diplomatic events that continue to emerge out of the war crimes, ethnic cleansing, brutality that the civil war throughout the Balkans produced.
Before departing, he visits and becomes concerned over the care being provided to, Janie Reston, a charcter very special to John from the original novel, Bargained for Exchange.
So, this tale really becomes two stories wrapped into one as a new character, Kathrine Price, equally well trained as a Federal Agent, is introduced into the story. I will not go into great detail, but the story line splits into two segments occurring concurrently, one in the deep south of the United States and the other in Europe that are at once entwined with one another, but also that stand alone in their own right. Which later, merge back together for an astounding and exciting conclusion.
Blending legal and diplomatic issues right out of todays headlines with exceptional espionage and special forces actions, and adding the health care twist, Macomber keeps the reader engaged and on the edge of their seat right through the entire novel with characters, both villians and protaganists, that the reader is empowered to get into.
Lots of twists, lots of actions, romance, and brilliant flash backs to Matsens World War II experiences with historical information that any reader of this genre is bound to take interest in. The story is not only engaging and exciting, it is also very informational.
I highly recommend the read...you will not regret it.
...and if this is your first Macomber novel, then after reading this one, youll definitely want to go back and pick up the other two.
FYI, Jim Macomber’s latest novel. It’s a good one!
Is it available on Amazon? Gotta check it out!

I appreciate the heads up on this book and its author. Another poster mentioned another author in the same genre a few weeks ago (Chad Thor) and I have enjoyed reading several of his books since then.
