Are rabies shots mandatory in the States?

I’m not sure if they are required everywhere, but it seems like it. Usually a dog or cat owner has to get the animal vaccinated in order to purchase a tag for the animal. There are few incidents of rabies in domestic animals.

Rabies shots are pretty much mandatory over here, hence the six month quarantine when bringing a pet into the UK from the USA.
