I was in the Silent Service under Reagan. The older guys told me horror stories of serving under Carter. A lot of subs came close to being on "eternal patrol" because of Jimmah's cuts to parts and maintenance.

I wonder how different a world we might be living in now had Al Gore won 2000. His almost certain bumbling of a response to 911, coupled with a clear connection of a leftists weak-on-terror policy (without any possible connection that had been done to President Bush) might have led to a Reagan-esque sweep of the 2004 election, disabling the left for at least two decades.
