...but we have had it before in ages past when there weren't enough people and fossil fuels to have brought it about.

And yet the cycle of warming and cooling appears in ice core data going back hundreds of thousands of years without significant human contribution?

If that is the case, why did the cycle happen then with no significant human input?

It would be reasonable to believe that the same forces which drive climate cycles have been doing so all along rather than blame some sudden 'critical mass' of human endeavour.

THe Earth is a lovely planet, and we humans are lucky to have been given such a wonderful place to live by our Creator, but we are as likely to interfere with its major cycles as we are to change the direction of its rotation.

I have an MA in Medieval Studies. A lot of my friends think that it was a waste of time. They ask me why I should bother studying the past.

The fact is that there are some strong similarities between the Middle Ages and the present. We have a scientifically illiterate population which is getting more superstitious by the day. We are probably already living in a post-literate generation. And people look to the religion of anthropomorphic global warming and the great pope Al Gore to give meaning to their lives.

In the end, Al Gore didn’t need a divinity degree. Just like Ron L Hubbard, he started his own religion and became the spiritual leader of a vast assortment of fools across the planet.

I have more to say, but it’s a busy day.

“it’s still right and proper to distinguish among homophones”

You are just a homophoneophobe who is in denial!

Sorry, I just didn’t think I’d ever get to use the term homophoneophobe again in this life time. Think I’ll make it to the Oxford English Dictionary? LOL!

Thanks.

What frightens me more than anything, is that humans will try to intervene to alter the supposed changes which could end up being more dire than whatever is happening now. I'm not unsympathetic to pockets of populations on the planet where unusually high temperatures killed a lot of people.

I did take the time to read the one article about the ice core. That was interesting. I think fairly recent history teaches us that Greeland was once habitable. I don't know if any part of it is now or not (except certain people who are obviously there for research).

I can't remember, and Antarctica may have been too remote to colonize in the past if it had been habitable at some point in history when there were humans. Is Antarctica all ice that may have brought and deposited DNA evidence of trees, for example, or might that have come from water freezing to ice and movements from elsewhere? What is under all that ice? Have they found out? I can't possibly read up on everything.

If you're serious, refer to post 14. Sourcery has put together an excellent summation of the problems with global warming.

Considering the mess, this is still a very informative thread!

Yes, those are good links, thank you. That’s how I found and read the ice core article. I’ll try to get back to more of those. Much else on my mind today.

There has always been a changing climate. Man didn’t do it. Al Gore saw a way to make gobs of money and get some recognition in his otherwise pitiful existence.

Al Gore: I am here to educate you about the single biggest threat to our planet. You see, there is something out there which threatens our very existence and may be the end to the human race as we know it. I'm talking, of course, about Manbearpig. It is a creature which roams the Earth alone. It is half man, half bear, and half pig. Some people say that Manbearpig isn't real. Well , I'm here to tell you now, Manbearpig is very real, and he most certainly exists—I'm cereal. Manbearpig doesn't care who you are or what you've done. Manbearpig simply wants to get you. I'm super cereal. But have no fear, because I am here to save you. And someday, when the world is rid of Manbearpig, everyone will say, "Thank you Al Gore—you're super awesome!" The end.
