Giuliani and Roe (Rudy caught in another lie)

Giuliani and Roe [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Somehow I missed a St. Petersburg Times story from earlier this month that sheds some light on the claims that Giuliani's social-conservative supporters are making for him.

Bruce F. Berg, who chairs the political science department at Fordham University, has an archive that may be the envy of anyone interested in New York City politics. It documents every mayoral news conference in the city dating back to 1996.

Berg has DVDs of what was said and how they said it, covering all but the first two years of the Rudy Giuliani era.

Does he have any records of Giuliani speaking about a program to reduce abortions by encouraging adoptions?

"They don't exist," says Berg, who used the database in writing his new book, New York City Politics: Governing Gotham, a thorough analysis of the city's major institutions.

So Giuliani made a big point of promoting adoption over abortion, without ever saying anything about it. And then there's this:

Mary Alice Carr, vice president for Communications at NARAL Pro-Choice New York, still has a proclamation signed by Giuliani that made Jan. 22, 1998 "Roe v. Wade Anniversary Day" in the city. She also provided a copy of a NARAL questionnaire from 1997, signed by Giuliani.

Would he support unrestricted Medicaid funding for abortions? Would he oppose legislation that made minors get parental or court approval before getting an abortion? Did he agree with the Roe v. Wade decision?

Giuliani circled Yes, Yes and Yes.

But don't worry: He's a "strict constructionist." Sure.

If you believe that Rudy will appoint CONSERVATIVE Judges to the U.S. Supreme Court - you’re nuts!

A lot of this is online in the NYC archives. We've posted a lot of it here.

But this guy is absolutely right in pointing to a lie that Giuliani has been telling since early in his campaign. I pointed it out months ago. That is that Giuliani keeps pointing to the alleged increase in adoptions while he was Mayor. He uses this as a lame defense when he is accused of being pro-abortion. The facts that I exposed months ago were that despite Giuliani's claims, the adoptions in NYC had NOTHING to do with abortion alternatives. There was no such program in place AT ALL. Giuliani went further and even gave the number of adoptions that he took credit for increasing. I showed that the adoption numbers that he was using were for adoptions of children between the age of 0 months and 18 years of age. Further, I spoke to Children's Services in NYC and verified that there is no such program in place to provide adoptions as an abortion alternative and that EVERY adoption in the figures that they had released (and that Giuliani was quoting) were for adoption wherein the parent(s) had their parental right severed. These are cases of criminal abuse, neglect, abandonment, etc. NONE of these were listed as an abortion alternative. NONE.

He is not vastly better than the Democrat options.

Is marginally better at most.

His positions on the issues and what he believes according to him in recorded statements are almost exactly like Clintons.

So give us a break on the effort to make him seem so much better than Clinton.

It doesn't wash!

The problem is ... Guiliani has a good chance of getting the nomination because the conservative competition is split. That is my fear.

There is a story now, I think it’s in Salon, that Giuliani is routinely fudging statistics in his debate appearances making totally inaccurate claims about his tax cuts, budget cuts, etc. while he was mayor. They say he’s getting away with it because the debate format doesn’t allow any time for him to be challenged. I don’t think most of the MSM will point it out, however. If Hillary is their favorite Democrat and their pick to win, Rudy is probably their favorite Republican in the race since he’s certainly no conservative.

I think it's more likely that he would appoint someone who is openly gay or maybe even a transexual. Maybe not, though. It might be hard to get such a nomination confirmed. I do think he'd want to do that.

That ought to put to rest any bullcrap that there is even a chance in HELL that Rudy911 would EVER appoint a judge who even MIGHT overturn Roe.

but...but...if you vote for Rooty...we can win...it doesn’t matter that you gave it all up and are now irrelevant.

Hey, If I am going to be irrelevant, I will do it without a vote for Rooty.

I think that the worst case scenario would be Rooody as President with a ‘rat majority in both houses. Just like Rino Arnie in California. Everything that goes wrong will be blamed on the ‘pubs and anything good will be credited to the dims.
