WASHINGTON – Mexico's former President Vicente Fox is making no secret of his desire to promote a "North American Union" to compete economically with Europe and the Far East.
In a promotional tour for his new book, "Revolution of Hope," Fox told NPR's "Talk of the Nation" audience: "That's part of my Americas dream, that we can build our future together. We are partners with United States and Canada through NAFTA. There are other blocs in Latin America, but at the very end a continental trade agreement and union on the long term would be a way to develop ourselves and to be able to have the standards and level of living that we all need."
Fox shocked many in the U.S. earlier in the week when he told CNN's Larry King that he and President Bush had agreed to work toward a common currency not only for North America but for Latin America as well.
It was possibly the first time a top official of Mexico, Canada or the U.S. openly confirmed a plan for a regional currency. Fox explained the current regional trade agreement that encompasses the Western Hemisphere is intended to evolve into other previously hidden aspects of integration.
According to a transcript published by CNN, King, near the end of the broadcast, asked Fox a question e-mailed from a listener.
"Mr. Fox, I would like to know how you feel about the possibility of having a Latin America united with one currency?"
Fox answered in the affirmative, indicating it was a long-term plan. He admitted he and President Bush had agreed to pursue the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas – a free-trade zone extending throughout the Western Hemisphere, suggesting part of the plan was to institute eventually a regional currency.

That said...FOX might want something that the US didn’t agree to and he’s just bitching, venting, and promoting a new book.
There’s a lot we don’t know.
Get a grip. It isn’t the name, it’s the culture. The mexican culture, customs, language etc are alien to the U.S. in many ways. Canada has it’s own culture, which is very similar to the U.S. so it would be a minor problem if Canada and the U.S. were to merge, except that the U.S. would have a large influx of idiot liberals.
Or we could assassinate every Mexican “leader” and reinstall a new government.
Tell ya what, I think that would be more popular in the US than the Iraq war is.
Our main enemies are Red China and Islam, not Hispanic America.
The idea of an international economic union and free trade empire encompassing North and South America is inherently a good one. It could create a powerful economic dynamo which could blow away our enemies in the Old World. There is some sense in what Fox is stating. South and Central America are rich in resources and have a population which, given the opportunity, is very frequently more hard-working and entrepeneurial than American citizens. Also, they are mainly Christian - not communist or Islamic, and have strong family values like the ones which characterized early American citizens.
The main problem here is the way the Bush Administration has approached this issue. Anglo-Hispanic animosity has been flamed by the current administration’s highhanded tactics and failure to lay out a positive plan for the American public. It has been flamed by the Bush’s failure to deal with illegal invaders.
Increasing outsourcing of American industry to Latin American countries - essential Christian and non-communist - instead of to Red China makes extremely good sense. Increasing the immigration quotas for legal immigrants from Latin America also makes sense. Spanish-American immigrants for the most part are very hardworkiing people who start businesses and frequently hold multiple jobs. They understand and recognize the eocnomic opportunities so many American take for grated or ignore. But permitting millions of undocumented aliens, many of them potential Islamic sleepers from the Old World, into the U.S. is the height of folly.

No, we’re not assuming much of anything. We’re just reading the script from the script-writers who’ve been effectively in power for decades and who’ve been inreasing their iron grip on power along with their ruthlessness.

I do believe that honorable living according to God’s priorities and earnest prayer can slow some aspects of it down for a time. But even such windows of opportunity for such slowing appear to be increasingly closeing.
