Here's my anonymously sourced, second-hand Fred Thompson story that confirms the conventional wisdom. Takes place at a dinner in Washington last winter. Thompson is sitting next to a Hollywood insider who asks him, Why weren't you interested in being president of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America)? Look, Thompson says. Dick Wolf (creator of "Law and Order") pays me a lot of money to work two days a week. Why would I work for less money and work six days a week? Okay, says the insider, I get that. Then a few weeks later comes the news that Thompson wants to be president of the United States.
I wouldn't share that story if I hadn't just spent three days with Thompson on the campaign trail in Iowa, during which I gathered enough evidence with my own eyes and ears to conclude that what the anecdote suggests - Thompson is lazy, he doesn't lust for the presidency - could very well be true. I saw how he enters a room (tentatively), how he addresses a crowd (dispassionately), how he interacts with voters one-on-one (reluctantly). You hear about politicians who draw energy from the people around them. I would say of Thompson that he sucks energy out, and then lets it dissipate.
--snip--
But to conclude therefore that Thompson won't be a factor in the Republican primary race would be a foolish - maybe even grave - mistake.(continued)

I’m awed! Doesn’t Jurgen Proknow have an Austrian accent? I think I read that somewhere. I could listen to him for ages ... one line in a superb film version of Robin Hood (with Uma Thurman) where Jurgen plays the cruel Sir Miles, intended for Maid Marian — he says, “Catch the poacher!” Only his pronunciation of “poacher” is more like, “poe-chow-eghhhhhh.” I LOVE it!
I’ll have to second that. I’ve been trying to follow his interviews and speeches but, I’ve found him lackluster and tedious. From the way he has to clear his throat every few seconds, he need to stay away from those cigars. What exactly is his medical condition?
But, are you sure there isn’t any way you can be convinced otherwise? If you were to change your opinion of Fred, you wouldn’t have to apologize for it anymore. Wouldn’t that be worth it?
Whom do you support and why?
When people can’t argue they attack. I am just saying that he is not exciting, is not a leader, cannot connect with the public and has no ideas. Other than that he is a nice guy.
But if he had an Austrian accent, I would never know it, because that just sounds NORMAL to me!!!!!
If you were to change your opinion of Fred, you wouldnt have to apologize for it anymore. Wouldnt that be worth it?
I know there are a lot of Fredheads on FR who really believe in their chosen candidate, as I do in mine.
I’m only apologizing because I know that I get really sick and tired of the nasty and hateful remarks FReepers make about Mitt Romney, whom I have chosen to support.
Now I remember ... it was that he had a Northern accent. You’re right, also to the spelling of his name — I couldn’t remember the correct spelling!
The subtitles simply do not do justice to it! I guess all sailors are a little on the foul-mouthed side . . . .
It is Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma which is currently in remission. But don't expect anyone here to discuss it, or how this revelation (I am sure that the majority of the voting public has no idea) will effect the general election if he is our nominee.
I have asked if anyone has any feeling on how people will react when the MSM starts in on all of the inevitable exposes about this disease (kind of like they did with Dick Cheneys heart condition only 10 times worse), but I have yet to get answers. I personally think it will be a huge liability, but not many here agree. His physicians say he is healthy enough to run, so that seems to be ok by his supporters.
