Ann Coulter on CNBC Show: Jews Need 'Perfecting'

NEW YORK Appearing on Donny Deutsch's CNBC show, "The Big Idea," on Monday night, columnist/author Ann Coulter suggested that the U.S. would be a better place if there weren't any Jewish people and that they needed to "perfect" themselves into -- Christians.

It led Deutsch to suggest that surely she couldn't mean that, and when she insisted she did, he said this sounded "anti-Semitic."

Asked by Deutsch whether she wanted to be like "the head of Iran" and "wipe Israel off the Earth," Coulter stated: "No, we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say. ... That's what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament."

Deutsch told E&P's sibling magazine, Adweek, today, "I was offended. And then, and this was interesting, she started to back off and seemed a little upset."

Asked to gauge her reaction, Deutsch said, "I think she got frightened that maybe she had crossed a line, that this was maybe a faux pas of great proportions. I mean, did it show ignorance? Anti-Semitism? It wasn't just one of those silly things."

A transcript, provided by Media Matters, follows. *

DEUTSCH: Christian -- so we should be Christian? It would be better if we were all Christian?

COULTER: Yes.

DEUTSCH: We should all be Christian?

COULTER: Yes. Would you like to come to church with me, Donny?

DEUTSCH: So I should not be a Jew, I should be a Christian, and this would be a better place?

COULTER: Well, you could be a practicing Jew, but you're not.

DEUTSCH: I actually am. That's not true. I really am. But -- so we would be better if we were - if people -- if there were no Jews, no Buddhists --

COULTER: Whenever I'm harangued by --

Your welcome. I’ve read the transcript more than once and I had the same impression you did. Although I also had the feeling Mr. Deutsch was trying to create a “GOTCHA” moment.

The cynic in me tells me Mr. Deutsch and Media Matter’s work in cahoots with one another. I have no proof of that, of course, but wouldn’t be surprised if they each had one another on speed dial.

I got sick of her a while ago. Really, when somebody says some of the thing she said ("Rape the earth," etc.) it's a sign that she could be unstable and say things that might be offensive to you later.

But in a contrarian spirit: when somebody says "Everybody should eat this ice cream" or "Everybody should be Irish" they don't literally mean that other dessert companies should go out of business or that other ethnic groups should assimiliate or die.

So I could say, "Everybody should come to Jesus!" as an exclamation, without implying that others should be converted at the sword's point.

“why, thank you! I have your permission? Aren’t you sweet...”

It wasn’t intended as permission, but aren’t you clever with a quip. I don’t think you know what “perfection” means in this sense, nor do you have a clue as to Christian teaching on the matter. But by all means, get offended first, and ask questions later. Simply put, it means “complete reconciliation with God.” The concept is completeness in the spiritual sense. Christians don’t believe that is possible without Jesus as Savior. It’s kind of what the whole religion is based on.

“But based on your comment, I don’t expect you to understand that.”

My goodness, from what part of my comment are you drawing such a grand inference? If you took from my comment that I don’t respect the faith of others, I’d like to know how. That’s a pretty good sized accusation to throw out there. Walk me through it.

"since 113 is your first and only post on FR and you joined today, I’ve got to ask......did you join specifically for this subject and thread?"

Well, I'd speculate a confluence of factors--libs trying a type of viral marketing campaign for Hillary (ala Rush Limbaugh), certain banned axe grinding retreads who didn't like Ann's last book, and folks with a very, very thin skin (applies to the banned axe grinding retreads as well).

Did you ask the “peace” protestors why they were rising to violence in confronting you?

I'd always given Ms. Coulter a wide berth on her views despite some of the bizarre things she'd espouse. Not anymore.

Then you're as dim as Donnie Deutsch, one of the "CHosen People".

BTW, as a Chrisitan I am not offended in the least that Donnie considers himself one of the chosen people.

Not only did I read the primary source (many times) but I know what “perfect” means in this context. It doesn’t mean what you said.

The knee jerk Ann critics on this thread screwed up big time, and are as precisely as obnoxious as they falsely accuse Ann of being.

They owe her a big apology,...

Got an ice skate concession in Hell do you?

... but I'm not holding my breath.

A wise decision Bear.

>What is your stand on Christopher Hitchens?

I’ll take a shot at that.

Like Coulter, I happen to agree on some points & disagree on others.

Unlike Coulter, I believe he has the ability to persuade people to actually change their minds, though a combination of information, respect for his intellect, and the brand of (drunken) charisma he brings to the table. Coulter’s charisma is interesting, but ultimately it’s a matter of preaching to the choir even more than it is a matter of selling books.

I do believe that Hitchens has managed to turn some liberals into liberal hawks by virtue of what he’s written about Iraq & Islamic fundamentalism. Some, perhaps, into the conservative realm, even, though that’s less likely. Still, given the choice between knowing someone is either a liberal or a liberal hawk, I prefer liberal hawk. Which is a term that many would easily substitute for ‘neocon,’ and on both sides of the aisle.

I cannot imagine that Coulter has such ability. And I’d love to see them debate.

Actually, his review of Godless (in a publication called The Liberal, if I recall), was a great read.

The drive by media is either creating "gotcha" moments out of whole cloth as with Rush or egging people on as with Ann Coulter.

I think the question should be raised as to why the driveby media is looking for "gotcha" moments. I think the answer is that Liberals are incapable of dealing with ideas or free enterprise ideas and they seek to do personal attacks as the Communists do (very little difference between the two these days). A gotcha moment -- provoked or wholly contrived -- serves as a personal attack just as the Soviet Communists used to do; hence, it is the favorite weapon of our neo Communist drive by media and the Democrat party.

There's a reason why Liberal reporting is gotcha reporting. Anyone remember Andy Hilliard's pop quiz to candidate, George W. Bush? Who can answer those questions?

I agree with you whole heartedly. I get tired of the self-righteousness of the Ann “bashers.” They’re always “supporters” of Ann but “NO MORE.” “This time she’s went too far!” They’ve...”defender her for the last time!” Or their favorite. “She does the conservatives more harm than good...she’s hurting the movement!” As opposed to the conservative leadership. Right? What conservative leadership? President Bush?

YOu can watch the video to find the answer. I have my own style of doing things. If I'm going to take movies, I'm going to try to make them entertaining.

I read her book on the Church of Liberalism and agreed with her on many points. I often find her style abrasive and condescending. I consider myself a strong Christian and very intelligent but if she was trying to make a subtle point I missed most of it.
