Alberto Gonzales hires defense attorney
By LARA JAKES JORDAN, Associated Press Writer 29 minutes ago
Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has hired a high-powered Washington lawyer to represent him in investigations of mismanagement of the Justice Department.
George Terwilliger, a white-collar crime defense attorney and the Justice Department's No. 2 in the early 1990s, last month was on the White House's short list to replace Gonzales.
Now he'll be Gonzales' defender as federal investigators look into allegations that the former attorney general lied to lawmakers and illegally allowed politics to influence hiring and firing at the Justice Department.
In an interview Wednesday, Terwilliger said Gonzales maintains he did nothing wrong or illegal and the fact he has hired an attorney should not signal any guilt.
"It would really be unfair to individuals who are smart enough to get themselves a lawyer to draw some inference that they need a lawyer because they did something wrong," Terwilliger told The Associated Press. "Nor has he been accused of wrongdoing. Investigations are conducted to find the facts. And the facts will show that Judge Gonzales acted honorably in all circumstances while holding positions of great responsibility and importance to maintaining the safety of the country."

Yep
I don’t really need a criminal defense attorney, but I’m going to spend $700 to $800 an hour just to have one on retainer.
The Democrats are going to drive a freight train over Gonzales !!
This is what the democrats have come to; killing people. Just like Justice Thomas said on air and in his book. Not literal killing, but killing of character and reputation.
Gonzales may not have been the most competent, but I doubt he did anything illegal.
I hate the democrats.
with his demonstrably poor memory, he needs an attorney. He’d be an easy set up for a perjury sting like the other guy with the faulty memory, Libby.
Unless the Republicans pull this next election out of the fire most of us here on FR are probably going to have to hire attorneys.
Not really, I'm sure you've heard the old legal maxim:
"an attorney who represents himself has a fool for a client"
When you are accused of wrong doing, by someone who can do more than just flap his gums about it, you *need* an attorney. Whether you are Alberto Gonzales, or Joe Sixpack. You also need one whether you are guilty or not.
You don't pay by the hour to have them on retainer. It's like an option. They are agreeing to take your case, but haven't actually done anything yet. Plus they *are* your attorney of record and are, in general, covered by attorney client privilege from the point that you put them on retainer, should that become important sometime in the future.
“Alberto Gonzales hires defense attorney”
I hope that he picks attorneys better than President Bush.
So true. We might have to organize our own legal defense fund. Not that the JBTs who come to haul us away to a "People's Court", will care much for the legal niceties, except perhaps in form, rather than substance.
That's why we have the "reset button".
Gonzales was born with a set.........of bb’s
LOL
Gonzales deserves the same treatment he and his henchmen imposed on officers on the border. Since he was following orders from Mexico they should pick up some of his defense expenses.
I hope they stick Gonzales into the same cell as the the border agents he railroaded.
Considering that he took a non-event like the attorney firing and made it a legitimate scandal by lying to Congress, I hope you're right.
He'll need 'em.
“I hate the democrats.”
It has gone WAAAAAYY BEYOND hate with me!

Some are chuckling at your remark... but I know that we will all be lucky if hiring an attorney is all that we will need. Our Constitution and way of life are but one dim victory away from dying before our eyes.
